Position Summary
The CNC Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC machining equipment to manufacture precision components used in heavy equipment attachments, custom fabrication projects, and equipment repairs. The successful candidate produces high-quality parts while maintaining productivity, safety, and continuous improvement standards. This position works closely with Welding, Fabrication, and Quality teams to support efficient project completion.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Machining
- Set up and operate CNC machining centres to produce precision components.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and work orders.
- Program or edit CNC programs using CAM software and machine controls as required.
- Select tooling, fixtures, work holding, feeds, and speeds appropriate for each job.
- Perform first-off inspections and adjust machine offsets to maintain dimensional accuracy.
- Machine mild steel, alloy steel, and specialty materials.
Production & Quality
- Manufacture parts within specified tolerances and production schedules.
- Inspect finished components using calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Maintain quality documentation and inspection records.
- Identify and report non-conforming parts and recommend corrective actions.
- Continuously monitor machining performance to reduce scrap and improve cycle times.
Equipment Maintenance
- Perform daily machine inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Maintain tooling inventory and identify worn or damaged cutting tools.
- Keep machines, tooling, and work areas clean and organized.
- Report equipment issues requiring repair.
Collaboration
- Support Welding and Fabrication departments by producing components on schedule.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives that increase efficiency and quality.
- Assist with prototype development and custom one-off projects.
Health & Safety
- Follow all WorkSafeBC regulations and company safety procedures.
- Wear required PPE and maintain a safe work environment.
- Safely operate cranes, forklifts, and lifting devices (training provided where required).
- Participate in safety meetings and continuous improvement activities.
Qualifications
Required
- Red Seal Machinist or equivalent experience preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of CNC machining experience.
- Strong understanding of machining practices and tooling.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience with 3-axis CNC mills.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred
- Experience with Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar CAM software.
- Experience machining large fabricated weldments.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment, mining, forestry, or construction industries.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification.
- Portable inline boring experience
- Basic welding or fabrication knowledge.
