Helix Packaging is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to independently own and run the company’s HR function. Reporting to the CFO, this position has full accountability for HR strategy, compliance, payroll oversight, recruitment, and employee relations, operating as the sole HR resource for the organization while partnering closely with Finance and Operations.
This role is ideal for an HR professional who can independently build and run a full-cycle HR function in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, formalizing HR responsibilities that currently sit within the Finance department without relying on additional HR staff.
Human Resources Administration
- Manage employee onboarding and offboarding processes.
- Prepare employment agreements, offer letters, and employment documentation.
- Maintain employee personnel files and HR records.
- Coordinate new hire orientations.
- Administer employee benefits and enrollment changes.
- Maintain vacation, leave, and attendance records.
- Process employment verification and confirmation letters.
- Maintain organizational charts and employee information.
Recruitment & Talent Acquisition
- Coordinate recruiting activities.
- Post job advertisements.
- Screen resumes.
- Schedule interviews.
- Coordinate candidate communications.
- Support hiring managers throughout the recruitment process.
- Coordinate onboarding documentation.
Employee Relations
- Respond to employee HR inquiries.
- Assist managers with employee documentation.
- Maintain employee policies and handbook.
- Coordinate employee engagement initiatives.
- Support performance review administration.
Payroll Administration
- Collect and review employee timesheets.
- Verify employee hours prior to payroll processing.
- Maintain payroll master files.
- Administer vacation and sick leave balances.
- Coordinate payroll information with Finance.
- Maintain payroll documentation and employee changes.
- Support agency payroll administration.
- Escalate timesheet discrepancies or data anomalies to Finance for resolution prior to processing deadlines.
Compliance
- Maintain compliance with Employment Standards Act requirements.
- Maintain compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and applicable human rights legislation.
- Coordinate WSIB administration.
- Lead and conduct workplace investigations as required.
- Maintain training records.
- Coordinate health & safety documentation with Operations.
- Coordinate immigration documentation (LMIA applications, work permits, Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program support) in partnership with external immigration counsel.
HR Systems & Process Improvement
- Own and approve HR policies and procedures.
- Improve HR administrative processes.
- Maintain HR metrics and reporting.
- Select and lead implementation of an HRIS/payroll platform to replace manual tracking [name current or target system, e.g., ADP, Dayforce, Ceridian].
- Advise the CFO and leadership on HR risk, compliance exposure, and workforce planning.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related discipline.
- CHRP designation or working toward designation preferred.
- 5–8 years of progressive HR experience.
- Manufacturing experience considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage a full-cycle HR function without dedicated support staff.
- Experience administering payroll.
- Knowledge of Ontario Employment Standards Act.
- Experience with LMIA and immigration documentation is an asset; complex filings are supported by external immigration counsel.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills; HRIS/payroll systems preferred.
First-Year Objectives
Days 1–90
- Complete transition of day-to-day HR administration from Finance/Operations.
- Organize and digitize employee records.
- Establish baseline HR metrics and reporting.
Months 3–6
- Establish standardized HR policies and procedures.
- Improve onboarding and recruitment processes.
- Formalize payroll administration workflow with Finance, including escalation and error-resolution steps.
Months 6–12
- Implement or optimize HRIS/payroll system.
- Implement ongoing HR reporting and employee metrics.
- Support continued organizational growth, including recruitment planning for anticipated headcount increases.
