Job Description:
Mount Royal University offers credit-free Academic Upgrading courses through the Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension to prepare students for post-secondary studies. Students may improve high school grades or take courses they may have missed to prepare for admission into Alberta’s colleges and universities. The department is seeking an instructor with the ability to teach the following course part-time in the Fall 2026 semester:
Topics include: solution stoichiometry, acids and bases, oxidation-reduction, energy changes, reaction rates, chemical equilibria, redox reactions and electrochemistry. This is a quantitative chemistry course and therefore some math skills are strongly recommended. Corresponding Alberta High School Equivalent: Chemistry 30.
- Each chemistry laboratory is 1.5 hours in length and requires a brief lecture on topic(s) introduced and a description and/or demonstration of the lab activities and safety issues.
- Labs run each week during the 16-week semester.
- Topics covered include: solutions, acids and bases; oxidation-reduction; energy changes; reaction rates; chemical equilibria and electrochemistry.
- Instructors work with minimal supervision.
- Instructors are contracted on a per course basis.
The instructor is responsible for instruction using the approved curriculum, implementation of applicable curriculum assessment measures, and marking and submitting final course grades. The instructor will also be required to maintain regular contact with the administration team and adhere to program policies and deadlines.
Instruction
- Instruction includes all course and lesson preparation and marking.
- Utilize prepared course and student materials.
- Prepare quizzes and exams collaboratively with other lab instructors.
- Marking/grading.
Meetings
- Must attend laboratory orientation training & complete WHMIS training at Mount Royal
- Normally 1-2 program meetings per semester; individual meetings with Lead Instructor may be required.
Administrative
- Complete and submit all student grades in a timely manner.
- The minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s Degree in the discipline is required.
- Previous experience in classroom instruction and/or laboratory work is required.
- Some math skills are strongly recommended.
- Creativity, enthusiasm, patience and collegiality are highly desirable qualities for this position.
Salary: $36.74 per hour
