University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is seeking a Manager, Residence, reporting to the Associate Director of Ancillary Services to lead the effective management of Housing and Residence Life operations, ensuring our residence facilities operate safely, efficiently, and to hospitality-standard service levels.
In this key leadership role, you will provide strategic leadership and day-to-day operational oversight for residence services including, residence conduct, crisis response support, facilities operations, vendor/contract management, housekeeping standards, occupancy planning, and operational budgeting. You will collaborate closely with campus partners such as Student Success, Facilities, and other University departments to ensure that the residence services support student success, protect institutional assets, and deliver an outstanding residential experience aligned with best practices in accommodation management.
This position operates in a dynamic environment where complex issues can arise unpredictably and where sound judgment, decisive action, and strong relationship-building skills are essential. Flexibility in schedule is required, including participation in an on-call response function.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
Strategic and Operational Planning
- Developing and implementing operational plans that support student success within a sustainable business framework;
- Ensuring service delivery aligns with the direction of Student Success and Business Services and supports UNBC’s strategic priorities;
- Establishing qualitative and quantitative metrics to measure progress and outcomes;
- Creating operational capacity through effective systems, policies, and processes; and
- Building partnerships to advance strategic direction and residence priorities.
People and Change Leadership
- Providing leadership and direct supervision of residence staff to support a safe, inclusive, learning focused environment;
- Supporting the success of direct reports through mentorship, coaching, and performance evaluation;
- Cultivating respectful, diverse, and productive work and living environments; and
- Leading with cultural awareness, inclusivity, and collaboration across stakeholders.
Residence Conduct and Non-Academic Misconduct Management
- Developing and implementing a Residence-specific code of conduct;
- Providing oversight and/or direct support for student conduct concerns within residence;
- Conducting investigations and managing conduct processes with appropriate support and accountability;
- Applying prevention, education, and restorative practices, collaborating with Student Success on complex cases; and
- Supporting and coordinate conduct-related educational and prevention initiatives (e.g., bystander intervention, sexual violence prevention).
Student in Crisis Response Management
- Supporting students in crisis using a trauma-informed approach;
- Supporting staff who are assisting students in crisis;
- Coordinating support plans and connecting students to campus/community wraparound services; and
- Helping to remove barriers so students can access services effectively.
Financial and Resource Management
- Ensuring appropriate resourcing and financial sustainability of residence operations;
- Creating and monitoring capital management plans;
- Leading and supporting initiatives to generate revenue; and
- Developing and communicating progress/results as required.
Risk Management
- Identifying and mitigating operational risks;
- Ensuring compliance with University policies, collective agreements, and supplier/service agreements; and
- Maintaining a strong commitment to student and staff safety and promptly addressing safety concerns.
Residence Facilities and Building Operations
- Overseeing preventive and corrective maintenance planning in collaboration with Facilities;
- Conducting regular safety inspections and audits of residence facilities;
- Managing vendor relationships and monitoring service delivery against contract terms;
- Establishing and enforcing operational/service standards for residence spaces;
- Monitoring operational metrics (e.g., occupancy rates, maintenance response times, cost per bed, resident satisfaction);
- Ensuring compliance with health, safety, fire, and accessibility requirements; and
Coordinating occupancy planning and space utilization to optimize operational efficiency.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess:
- An Undergraduate degree;
- Minimum five (5) years of related experience in progressively responsible roles in a residence environment;
- Experience in managing residential, hospitality, or accommodation facilities;
- Demonstrated experience in vendor management and contract negotiation;
- Knowledge of building operations, maintenance planning, and facilities management principles;
- Supervisory/managerial and budget experience in a unionized environment;
- Proven experience with formal conflict mediation and conduct management;
- Understanding of best practices related to non-academic misconduct in a post-secondary environment;
- Understanding of best practices and direct experience supporting individuals in crisis;
- Excellent interpersonal, team building, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Working knowledge of StarRez and BANNER 9 (student and finance modules);
- Demonstrated success in revenue generation and marketing/sales;
- Understanding of best practices in facility management and capital planning;
- ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) or equivalent is an asset;
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License; and
- Ability to obtain/maintain a clear Criminal Record Check.
Salary
The starting salary will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education, skills, and experience. The annual salary range for this position is $85,000 to $90,000. The position is located on campus, in Prince George

Normal hours of work will be 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. This position includes a significant after-hours on-call requirement. The successful candidate will be expected to be available outside of regular working hours to respond to urgent matters as they arise.
