Commitment: Spring Program: Ongoing Every Saturday and Sunday 9 am until July 19, Fall Program: Once a week, Schedule To be Determined
Program Start Date: Every Saturday and Sunday from May 9 and 10 to July 19th (20 sessions). Fall Schedule to be determined will be 20 weeks, once a week, most likely Saturday or Sunday morning.
Requirement: Must Complete Vulnerable Sector Check.
About Us
Project Skate HC is dedicated to making hockey accessible to all children, regardless of their financial background. We are launching a learn-to-play hockey program designed specifically for low-income youth who have never played hockey before. Our mission is to provide these children with the skills, confidence, and love for the game that will enable them to thrive on and off the ice.
Position Summary
We are seeking passionate and patient Volunteer Hockey Instructors to join our team. As an instructor, you will play a vital role in introducing the sport of hockey to a group of enthusiastic youth. Your efforts will help lay the foundation for these kids to eventually join a league and enjoy the many benefits that come from participating in organized sports.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach Basic Hockey Skills: Introduce and develop fundamental hockey skills, including skating, stickhandling, passing, and shooting.
- Foster a Positive Learning Environment: Create a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where all participants feel comfortable and confident.
- Promote Teamwork and Sportsmanship: Instill the values of teamwork, respect, and fair play in all activities.
- Adapt Instruction to Skill Level: Modify drills and instruction based on the varying skill levels of participants, ensuring everyone progresses at their own pace.
- Communicate with Participants and Families: Provide clear instructions and feedback to participants and keep families informed about their child's progress.
- Ensure Safety: Monitor participants’ safety on and off the ice, adhering to all safety protocols and guidelines.
- Assist with Equipment: Help participants properly fit and manage their hockey equipment, ensuring they are ready for each session.
Qualifications
- Passion for Hockey: A deep love for the sport and a desire to share that passion with others.
- Experience Working with Youth: Prior experience coaching or working with children, especially in sports, is highly preferred.
- Patience and Adaptability: Ability to work with beginners and adjust coaching methods to meet the needs of each participant.
- Strong Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with young players and their families.
- Commitment to Inclusivity: A commitment to creating an inclusive environment that welcomes all children, regardless of their background.
- Background Check: Must pass a background check prior to starting the position.
- Hockey Certification (Asset): Possession of coaching certifications, such as the Respect in Sport or NCCP Coach 1, is an asset but not required.
- Previous Coaching, and Player experience considered a strong asset
