We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the Khàtìnas.àxh Community School team . The KCS school is located on t he Traditional Territory of Teslin Tlingit Council. The Inland Tlingit community of Teslin is located on the picturesque shores of Teslin Lake in the southern Yukon at historical Mile 804 on the Alaska Highway. Khàtìna s.àxh Community School serves 50 - 60 pre-kindergarten to grade 9 students and offers an alternative high school program in a rural setting. Khàtìnas.àxh Community School is multicultural: the majority being citizens of the Teslin Tlingit Council First Nation (TTC). The school has close connections to the community, with First Nations ways of knowing and doing embedded in the school program and learning environment. We are moving towards a Land-based way of learning with an expectation for students to be learning on the land in place-based models as much as possible. As KCS moves towards an inclusive Outdoor and Place Based Learning school we are ensuring strong ties to local First Nation values, traditions, and culturally relevant learning opportunities entwined into the Yukon Curriculum. We are looking for people with dynamic skills in classroom management, place-based learning, and the ability to work with local First Nation, community stakeholders, and parents/caregivers to provide a holistic approach to learning.
This position provides an opportunity for educators to work closely with community and Stakeholders to build close relationships to help grow a culturally responsive and student-centred approach to learning. The focus is building students with efficacies in literacy, numeracy, and social responsibility in both the classroom and outdoors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor of Education
-
Recent teaching experience at the grade 7-9 range;
- Experience in assessment for learning and differentiating instruction;
- Experience with balanced literacy included modeled, shared, guided and independent reading and writing practices and vocabulary strategies and methodologies;
- Experience incorporating outdoor educational experiences and field trips into the curricular studies;
- Recent experience working with First Nation students and families in an educational setting/environment would be an asset;
- Experience working with Learning Assistance teacher to support students with a broad ability range;
- Experience writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Student Support Plans (SSPs) in an elementary school;
- Experience in adapting curriculum to meet a range of learning abilities and styles is an asset;
- Experience using a student record system for IEPs and SSPs would be an asset;
- Experience working with students with Autism is an asset;
- Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) is an asset;
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training is an asset;
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:
Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

A philosophy of inclusive education and excellent communications skills to work with students, staff, parents, and the greater community in meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of all students;
- Ability to play a leadership role with the School Based Team and classroom teachers in implementing differentiated instruction and assessment practices and in developing, supporting and evaluating appropriate Individual Education Plans;
- Skilled in practical applications of behaviour management, classroom management, planning and organizational skills
- Experience identifying and making appropriate referrals and interpreting and implementing recommendations from specialized assessments;
- Ability and willingness to become an important participant of the administrative team, in school planning, and promoting the well-being of all staff and students;
- Strong understanding of Yukon First Nation ways of knowing and traditional cultural values;
- Ability to work collaboratively with Yukon First Nation governments, Community Education Liaison Coordinator, council officials and families;
- Knowledge of mental health resources and all community resources required for elementary students;
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally-diverse student population.
