With head quarters based in Coteau-du-lac, Quebec (west of Montreal), Ronsco Inc. is an industry leading manufacturer and distributor of railcar and locomotive products, operates the largest independent wheelshop in Canada (Hamilton, Ontario), as well as providing railcar and locomotive repair services.
Role Definition:
The Mobile Railcar Repair Technician is responsible for performing on-site inspection, maintenance, and repair of railcars across Halifax and surrounding regions. This is a part-time, field-based position offering a flexible schedule, with the opportunity to transition into full-time employment based on performance and business needs. The ideal candidate has experience in railcar repair, mechanical systems, or related trades. However, motivated individuals with strong foundational skills and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply. A fully equipped company vehicle will be provided.
Responsibilities:
- Perform on-site diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on railcars at customer locations.
- Conduct structural and mechanical repairs, including cutting, welding, aligning, and component replacement in compliance with AAR (Association of American Railroads) and Transport Canada standards.
- Inspect railcars for defects and ensure all repairs meet safety and regulatory requirements.
- Complete modifications, retrofits, and restoration work on railcars and components.
- Perform preventative maintenance services to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
- Accurately complete inspection reports, repair documentation, and service logs, including parts and labor tracking.
- Maintain a high standard of quality control and workmanship.
- Safely operate and maintain a mobile service vehicle, tools, and equipment.
- Manage and track inventory and parts usage while in the field.
- Respond to emergency or priority repair requests as needed.
- Communicate effectively with customers, dispatch, and internal teams to ensure timely service delivery.
- Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental regulations, including company policies and site-specific safety requirements.
- Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to stay current with industry standards.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (driver’s abstract required).
- Ability to travel throughout Halifax Regional Municipality and surrounding areas.
- Strong mechanical aptitude; experience with industrial equipment, heavy machinery, or railcars is an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and work instructions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently in a mobile/field environment.
- Physically capable of performing manual labor, including:
- Lifting heavy components
- Climbing railcars and ladders
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Willingness to work flexible, part-time hours, including occasional evenings or call-outs depending on operational needs.
- Must become ERAILSAFE certified.
- H2S training and WHMIS training are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in railcar repair, freight car inspection, or railway operations
- Experience in mobile/field service roles
- Welding certification (CWB) or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of braking systems, couplers, and railcar components
- Electrical troubleshooting experience
- Experience working under AAR or Transport Canada rail standards
