The Opportunity:
McElhanney is looking for a Land Surveyor-In-Training to join our growing Fort St. John team and help shape the future of the BC Peace Region. In this role, you’ll work on meaningful projects that directly impact local communities and the energy sector, while advancing your career in a supportive and collaborative environment.
As a Land Surveyor in Training working towards your commission in British Columbia, you will assist in the delivery of construction, engineering and legal surveys for oil and gas development, land development and infrastructure projects. This role will include field and office duties, working with an experienced group of geomatics technologists and professionals who deliver projects across Northern BC. In this role, we will support your development as you work towards your BC Land Surveyor Commission, and you will be assigned an increasing level of responsibility as you build experience and regulatory competency.
Our work is dynamic, not routine, and involves supporting long-standing clients who trust us to deliver their most important projects. You will have access to mentorship through our well-established geomatics and legal surveying teams, be able to collaborate with other Land Surveyors in Training across the company and enjoy a culture that makes your professional development a priority.
The successful candidate should be willing to relocate to the Fort St John area. A generous relocation allowance is available for the successful candidate. McElhanney re-imburses the cost of professional fees annually, and our compensation package for Land Surveyors and Land Surveyors in Training is designed to recognize the additional effort of employees who work additional hours beyond their regular salary.

What You’ll Do
- Lead and direct field and office technical personnel on projects, assigning tasks and working in a team setting complete work and generate deliverables.
- Researching government registry and other records in support of proposal, field survey and legal survey plan preparation.
- Conducting field surveys, preparing accurate field notes, managing field to office information flow.
- Processing field survey data, resolving measurements and boundaries, preparing drawing deliverables.
- Ensuring safety and quality assurance procedures are carried out for field returns, drawings, legal plans, documents, and other deliverables.
- Other duties as required.
What You’ll Bring
- Eligible to register as a Land Surveyor in Training with the Association of BC Land Surveyors upon commencing employment.
- Geomatics Degree or Diploma and/or a Certificate of Completion from the Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors.
- Good communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in related computer applications (CADD and survey processing software).
- Physical ability to work in mountainous/forested terrain and remote areas.
- Ability to travel out of town for periods of time when called upon.
- A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
What Can We Offer You?
The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $115,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
