Electrical & Software Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Software Developer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the appropriate technical or research lead within the Grid Foresight Lab and works collaboratively with researchers, developers, and internal and external partners to support software development for electric energy systems research initiatives. The role operates in a dynamic, project-based environment with changing priorities, multiple deliverables, and the need to balance hands-on development work with technical coordination and problem-solving across teams.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Software Development And Application Support
- Develop, maintain, and support frontend and backend software applications and research prototypes for Grid Foresight Lab initiatives.

Design and maintain APIs, backend services, database integrations, and application components to support software functionality and research objectives.

Collaborate with researchers and stakeholders to implement technical solutions, troubleshoot issues, and improve application reliability and performance.
Testing, Deployment, And Operational Support
- Participate in testing, debugging, code reviews, and performance optimization activities to support software quality and maintainability.

Support deployment, maintenance, and operational activities for cloud-based and development environments.

Maintain technical documentation and contribute to development standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
Team Collaboration And Project Support
- Participate in Agile development activities including sprint planning, task tracking, and collaborative project delivery.

Work collaboratively with researchers, developers, students, and stakeholders to support project goals and timelines.

Perform other related duties and technical projects as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Minimum 2 years of hands-on full-stack software development experience.

Strong proficiency in Python, Node.js, React.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.

Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs.

Experience with SQL databases, including PostgreSQL.

Experience using Git and working in Agile environments with tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.

Experience with automated testing, debugging, and performance optimization.

Familiarity with AWS, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, or similar cloud and deployment tools is an asset.

Experience with research software, data analysis tools, AI/ML models, or real-time data systems is an asset.

Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
