PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Program Manager, this individual will work as a member of the clinical team to provide support and patient care.
Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains and ensures that the treatment area is kept clean and items removed at end of dialysis treatment.
- Cleaning the patient environment post dialysis treatment as per unit procedure and according to infection control protocols.
- Disposing of used blood tubing, dialyzers, dressing trays and other supplies at the end of the dialysis treatment.
- Cleaning the surfaces of the dialysis machine and other equipment used in the care of the patient according to infection control procedures.
- Cleaning after soils/spills (i.e. bodily fluids), dialysis chairs, and arranging for disposal according to infection control procedures.
- Removes medical waste including sharps containers from the treatment area.
- Ensures cleaning supplies are available in the treatment and patient care areas.
- Disposal of garbage from the patient care area.
- Ensures that the hemodialysis equipment is prepared for use.
- Aseptically prepares hemodialysis machines for treatments.
- Ensures that sufficient supplies and equipment are available for the dialysis treatment.
- Ensures supply cupboards and carts in patient area are stocked.
- Prepares on/off packs and distributes on/off packs to treatment area as needed.
- Prepares treatment supply bundles and distributed to treatment area as needed.
- Assists the Nursing staff with patient care as delegated
- Assists patients in and out of clinic.
- Weighing patients.
- Provide patient comforts (warm blankets, refreshments/ice, etc.).
- Responding to patient requests.
- Store patients’ personal belongings.
- Answer the phone and direct messages as needed.
- Assist with the dispatching of laboratory specimens as needed.
- Assisting with disinfecting the dialysis machines at the end of day.
- Responding to emergency situations as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Secondary School Diploma required
- Health Care Aide course or equivalent is an asset
- Previous experience in a health care environment is an asset
- Previous experience working with the public is an asset
- Knowledge of universal precautions
- Bilingualism is an asset
- Good oral communication skills and good listening skills are required to communicate effectively with other members of the health care team, patients, and visitors.
- Working effectively without constant supervision.
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant must be able to meet the physical demands of this position.
