A focus on the theoretical premises of planning and implementing suitable curricula in the various areas of Family Studies education in secondary schools will be explored. Instructional strategies, learning activities, and curriculum development will be examined while considering the unique needs of all students. Teacher Candidates will understand culturally responsive education, environmental sustainability, Indigenous education, global education, financial literacy and other 21st century competencies. Attention will be given to current resources, assessment and evaluation procedures, and current issues in Family Studies. (1.0 credit)
The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Curriculum and Pedagogy in Intermediate/Senior Family Studies. The instructor will guide teacher candidates in curriculum interpretation, lesson and unit planning, and inclusive instructional practice across the major sub-disciplines of Family Studies. Candidates will learn to teach within and across strands such as Parenting and Caregiving, Food and Nutrition, Individual and Family Development, Housing and Interior Design, and Textiles and Fashion, while considering the cultural, developmental, and socio-economic diversity of Ontario classrooms.
The instructor will also support teacher candidates in building professional competencies aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s curricular expectations and Western’s commitment to equity-informed and research-based teacher preparation.
- Prepare and deliver course content aligned with the Ontario Curriculum: Social Sciences and Humanities – Family Studies (Grades 9–12).
- Guide teacher candidates in planning responsive, differentiated lessons and units across key Family Studies strands, including: a) Human development, parenting, and caregiving; b) Nutrition, food literacy, and culinary education; c) Housing design and sustainable living; d) Textile construction, fashion, and design literacy
- Introduce inclusive instructional strategies that address diverse learning needs, Indigenous education, financial literacy, and environmental responsibility.
- Model best practices in assessment for, as, and of learning, in alignment with Growing Success.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to teacher candidates on instructional design, planning, and reflective practice.
- Collaborate with the course coordinator or Teacher Education Office as required to ensure alignment with program goals.
