Block 8 Academy is a progressive before and after school care centre for elementary students in Port Moody. We provide shuttle service from elementary schools, a rich base curriculum, and plenty of indoor and outdoor unstructured time. Our program includes fun community projects, art, music, homework help, financial awareness activities, and outdoor recreation time.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead a group of 12- 15 children in activities including science, games, drama and more, or assist a group leader.
- Supervise children to ensure safety at all times.
- Provide basic first aid when needed.
- Plan and facilitate daily activities based on curriculum outlines.
- Set up and take down shared program spaces.
- Communicate regularly with families /caregivers.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
- Build positive relationships with children and act as a supportive role model.
- Assist children during snack time and with clothing changes as needed.
- Help maintain a clean, safe environment, including light cleaning and sterilization tasks.
- Supervise children on outings and trips away from the centre.
- (Optional but beneficial) Drive children to and from school and assist with van entry/exit.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- At least 19 years of age.
- A high level of functional spoken and written English skills - sufficient to ensure successful communication with staff, children and families.
- 1-5 years of experience providing care and guidance to school-aged children in a daycare or recreational setting.
- At least 20 hours in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C (or equivalent) certification.
- Current clear criminal record search.
- (optional but highly beneficial) Class 5 Driver’s License, clean driver's abstract and sufficient driving experience to be comfortable driving children a short drive to school
- Be physically and mentally able to perform all tasks.
Hours of Work Sep-June:
- up to 5 afternoon shifts per week (2:30-5:30 or 6 pm weekdays).
- up to 5 morning shifts per week (7 or 7:30am to 9:00am).
- Daytime shifts are also available on school closure days such as Pro D day, winter, spring breaks
Hours of Work July-August:
We're open from 7am- 6pm during summer, we have 4-6 hour shifts available, up to 5 shifts per week.
Reporting Structure:
School Aged Childcare Leaders report to and are supported by the Supervisors and Facility Managers.
