Role Summary:
The Technical Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of advanced machinery used in the production of structural laminated timber on Element5’s Glulam Line. This role requires strong technical aptitude to monitor machine performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure optimal operation within defined parameters. Success in this position involves minimizing downtime, identifying and addressing mechanical concerns proactively, and maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Set up and calibrate machines prior to production, including cleaning and inspection.
- Monitor machine operations and make precise adjustments to maintain performance and quality standards.
- Inspect finished output to identify and correct machine-related defects.
- Accurately record quantities of approved and defective products.
- Maintain detailed and organized activity logs for each shift.
- Operate machinery and equipment safely and efficiently, following training and standard operating procedures to optimize plant performance.
- Remain flexible and adaptable to support different areas within the department as operational needs change.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives by offering suggestions, solving problems, and volunteering for committees or focus groups.
- Promptly report any safety, quality, maintenance, or production concerns to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
- Conduct visual inspections and complete documentation of parts as required to ensure quality standards are met.
- Follow all Element5 safety policies, manufacturing procedures, and workplace standards at all times.
- Provide feedback to management on opportunities for cost reduction, work process improvements, scheduling, and other efficient strategies.
- Maintain 5S standards by keeping the work area clean, organized, and compliant with company expectations.
- Prepare and submit reports and documentation accurately and on time as required.
- Participate in or lead special projects and assignments as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Professional Qualifications & Core Competencies:
- Knowledge of quality and compliance standards within a manufacturing environment.
- Able to interpret technical documentation and follow production specifications with precision.
- Comfortable using ERP systems and basic computer applications.
- Skilled in maintaining 5S workplace organization and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
- Knowledge of wood processing techniques and related coursework is considered an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality.
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to think critically under pressure.
- Effective communicator with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
- Adaptable and dependable with a proactive attitude toward continuous improvement
Experience & Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education considered an asset.
- Additional certifications or training in wood processing or related fields are considered an asset.
- 2–3+ years of experience operating machinery in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Hands-on involvement in continuous improvement initiatives, including problem-solving and process enhancements.
- Practical knowledge of safety policies, workplace standards, and compliance requirements.
Working Conditions & Environment:
Work is performed in a manufacturing and production environment with regular exposure to noise, dust, and other industrial conditions in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). The role requires frequent physical activity, including walking, bending, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods. Employees must be able to safely lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds as part of their regular duties. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times while on the production floor, as outlined in Element5’s safety policies and procedures. Work hours may vary based on production requirements, and employees may be required to work overtime or adjusted shifts to meet operational needs.
