Department: Primary Care Mental Health Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
- Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing required
- Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Certificate required, completed within the last twelve months required
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approaches Certificate considered an asset
- Recent and broad experience in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing required
- Demonstrated self-directed clinical practice considered an asset
- Excellent verbal de-escalation skills required
- Ability to complete thorough mental health status and risk assessments required
- Knowledge of psychotropic medications, symptom management, and health teaching considered an asset
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, including the Regulated Health Professions Act, College of Nurses of Ontario standards, and the Mental Health Act considered an asset
- Knowledge of major mental illnesses from a biopsychosocial perspective and experience working with individuals with serious mental illness considered an asset

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services, and community partners required
- Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
- Commitment to continuing education annually and to quality improvement initiatives required
- Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the healthcare team required
- Ability to assume responsibility for patient care within a total patient care model required
- Ability to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required
- Ability to problem-solve and function effectively in a fast-paced environment required
- Excellent assessment, critical thinking, and intervention skills required
- Basic computer proficiency required
- Commitment to personal safety and the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors required
- Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and the prevention of adverse health events required
- Satisfactory attendance and work record required
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
