POSITION TITLE: Communications Assistant Internship
Full Time 70 hours bi-weekly $18.80 per hour
PROGRAM: Administration
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
PURPOSE OF POSITION: To play a key role in enhancing internal and external communications, increasing community awareness, and supporting outreach efforts across the organization’s programs. Under the supervision of the leadership team, the intern will gain practical experience in content creation, social media management, digital storytelling, community engagement, and brand development.
Qualifications and Skills Required
Education and Knowledge:
· Diploma in Media Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Media, Journalism, Communications, or a related field (recent graduate preferred).
· Eligibility to participate in the internship program.
· Knowledge of communication principles, branding, and public relations.
· Understanding of social media platforms, digital marketing, and content management.
· Knowledge of content creation, including photography, videography, graphic design, and copywriting.
· Familiarity with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress or similar).
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and cloud-based collaboration tools.
· Experience with graphic design and content creation software such as Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro) and/or Canva.
· Understanding of social media analytics and basic marketing metrics.
· Knowledge of accessibility standards, inclusive communication practices, and plain language principles.
· Understanding of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical communications.
· Knowledge of the non-profit sector and an interest in social justice, equity, and community engagement is considered an asset.
· Bilingualism preferred and sensitivity to diversity and all cultures is essential.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Perform all duties in accordance with the Elizabeth Fry Society’s Policies and Procedures, organizational mandate and standards of conduct.
· Develop, schedule, and manage social media content across platforms to promote programs, services, and community initiatives.
· Create written and visual content, including newsletters, website updates, blog posts, and promotional materials.
· Support the planning and promotion of events, workshops, and community outreach activities.
· Collaborate with program staff to translate frontline work into engaging, respectful, and trauma-informed storytelling.
· Maintain and update the organization’s website to ensure accurate, current, and accessible information.
· Assist in the development and implementation of a communications strategy aligned with organizational goals.
· Monitor and analyze engagement metrics (e.g., social media insights, website traffic) and provide recommendations for improvement.
· Support branding consistency across all communications, ensuring alignment with organizational values and messaging.
· Assist with internal communications, including staff updates and resource materials.
· Contribute to data collection and reporting requirements related to communications activities and outcomes.
Pay: From $18.80 per hour
