Job Summary:
The Drafting & Estimating role at Tower Steel Buildings is a hybrid position combining technical drafting expertise with cost estimating responsibilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing detailed shop and erection drawings for pre-fabricated steel buildings while also developing accurate cost estimates. This role requires strong technical knowledge of metal building systems (MBS) software, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with project managers, fabrication, and sales teams to ensure projects are both cost-effective and technically sound.
Drafting Responsibilities
- Project Timelines: Ensure project timelines assigned by the office/project management are completed.
- Drawing Development: Develop steel building drawings using modeling and drafting.
- Compliance: Comply with requirements of the design drawings and with CISC standards, NBC and CWB codes.
- Steel Building Layouts: Produce steel building layouts with input from structural and architectural contract drawings.
- Client Requests: Respond to any requests for changes by the client and work with the Project Manager, Fabrication, and Installation Teams in troubleshooting throughout the project.
- Review Drawings: Review all drawings and sketches received from clients, architects, interior designers, and contractors to ensure thorough understanding of the client’s needs.
- Detailing: Obtain all necessary information to effectively detail complete drawing sets.
- Architectural Sketches: Prepare 2D and 3D architectural sketch drawings as required.
Estimating Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation: Prepare accurate cost estimates for steel building projects, including materials, fabrication, labor, and equipment.
- Quantity Take-Offs: Perform detailed material take-offs from contract drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
- Pricing: Develop pricing and proposals, ensuring competitive and profitable submissions.
- Value Engineering: Identify opportunities for cost savings through efficient material use, alternative designs, and construction methods.
- Change Orders: Assist in preparing pricing for change orders, revisions, and client-requested modifications.
- Database Management: Maintain and update costing databases, historical data, and vendor pricing for continuous improvement of estimates.
- Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of Metal Building Software, Revit and Tekla.
- Proven experience in drafting for steel fabrication.
- Proficiency in CAD software and other drafting tools.
- Strong understanding of CISC standards and NBC and CWB codes.
- Excellent technical and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, fabrication, and sales teams.
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy and quality.
- A degree or diploma in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
