Overview
The Part-time Cook is responsible for the daily operation of the Active Lifestyle Centre Café kitchen. This position prepares and serves quality meals, maintains a safe and sanitary kitchen, assists with menu planning, and ensures efficient kitchen operations. The Cook works collaboratively with staff and volunteers to provide a welcoming café experience while supporting the Centre's mission and programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook menu items, weekly specials, soups, sandwiches, and other café offerings.
- Plan menus and recommend seasonal or specialty items.
- Ensure food is prepared and presented according to quality and portion standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen in accordance with public health regulations.
- Monitor food inventory and communicate ordering needs to management.
- Receive, inspect, and properly store food deliveries using First In, First Out (FIFO) practices.
- Minimize food waste through effective planning and inventory control.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and report maintenance concerns promptly.
- Ensure all food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures are followed.
- Assist with preparing food for Centre events, catering, or special functions as required.
- Supervise and provide direction to kitchen staff and volunteers.
- Maintain positive relationships with customers, volunteers, staff, and suppliers.
- Assist with opening and closing kitchen procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support café operations.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a cook in a commercial kitchen or café.
- Valid Food Handler Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.

Hours of Work
- Monday to Friday 10am-2pm (schedule may vary based on café needs).
- Approximately 15–25 hours per week.
- Flexible hours of work as assigned.
- Occasional evenings or weekends may be required for special events.
Reporting Structure
- This position reports directly to the Office Manager.
- Indirectly to the Executive Director

Pay: $18.00-$22.00 per hour
