Job Summary
We are seeking a highly meticulous Structural Steel Drafting Checker to join our detailing team at JCM Steel Drafting. In this critical role, you will serve as our final line of defense for quality control. You will review, redline, and approve complex structural steel fabrication shop drawings and erection plans before they are released for production.
The ideal candidate has a deep background in steel detailing, an expert eye for spatial relationships, and a proven track record of catching dimensional errors and connection clashes using SDS2. Experience dealing with the intricate framing, exposed steel, and complex geometry typical of high-end architectural builds is highly valued.
Core Responsibilities
- Quality Assurance: Perform exhaustive checks on SDS2 3D models, shop drawings, erection plans, and miscellaneous metal details to ensure absolute accuracy.
- Design Verification: Cross-reference shop drawings against complex architectural designs, structural plans, and contract documents to eliminate geometric errors and field fit-up issues.
- Clash Detection & Geometry: Validate complex geometric layouts, sophisticated framing, stair/railing details, connection member sizes, bolt configurations, and weld symbols within the model environment.
- Material Validation: Verify material takeoffs, advance bills of material (ABMs), and shipping lists for precise procurement.
- Compliance Control: Ensure all detailing practices strictly comply with JCM Steel Drafting standards, project specifications, and industry codes (AISC / CISC regulations).
- Team Collaboration: Return detailed, clear redlines to SDS2 detailers and communicate effectively with Project Managers to resolve design discrepancies.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Minimum of 6–8 years of experience in structural steel detailing, with at least 2–3 years specifically dedicated to checking/QA roles. Experience with highly architectural builds is a major asset.
- Software: Expert, hands-on proficiency in SDS2 and Bluebeam Revu.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of steel fabrication processes, field erection methods, connection configurations, and welding symbols.
- Standards: Strong working knowledge of AISC and CISC codes, standard detailing practices, and connection frameworks.
- Attributes: Exceptional spatial reasoning, rigorous attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight project deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.
