Job Description & Objectives
The winemaker works together closely with the Operations Manager to lead, oversee and coordinate wine making activities at Andrews Farm & Winery.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Wine Production & Inventory Control
o Leading wine production and bottling; ordering winemaking supplies, sourcing fruit and juice for winemaking from the farm and other local farms
o Conducting regular lab tests on wine samples, in house and working with external lab; liaising with wine consultant to make any needed adjustments to wines and recipes
o Coordinating scheduling of other staff with the Operations Manager and Farm Store Lead for larger winemaking jobs; training support staff as needed on wine racking, filtering and bottling
o Keeping good wine production records; compiling records for government audits
o Communicating production schedule, target wine release dates and promotional strategies with Farm Store Lead and winery sales staff; coordinating sales staff training
Qualifications
Education
§ College or university degree in oenology, wine science, agriculture or related field, and/or hands-on co-op or work experience at a winery or on a farm
§ Smart Serve certification (may be sponsored by the company) and over 18 years of age
§ Food Handling and Food Safety certification (may be sponsored by the company)
§ Driver’s licence
Skills
§ Strong verbal and written communication skills
§ Excellent customer service
§ Time management and organization
§ Able to work independently and as a team
§ Winemaking experience an asset, however training provided
§ Some experience with tractors and farm equipment an asset
Physical Environment
§ Some heavy lifting
§ Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
§ Prolonged periods of standing
