Job Summary
Animal Care Technicians are responsible for providing humane handling and care for all shelter animals while assuring all nutritional, housing and basic medical and behavioural needs are met on a daily basis. Ensure a safe and sanitary shelter environment is maintained at all times Assists the public when admitting and adopting animals and promotes responsible pet ownership in conversations with customers.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Daily cleaning of animal housing areas
- Daily feeding of animals
- Performing daily medical and behavioural evaluations of animals
- Providing assistance to our Registered Veterinary Technicians as needed
- Administering various medications to animals under directions of medical staff
- Administer vaccines
- General bathing and grooming of animals as required;
- Assisting with enrichment of animals
- Cleaning of various areas of shelter facility
- Laundry, sorting, folding, putting away; restocking supplies in animal rooms
- General cleaning and disinfecting of the premises and equipment used within the shelter, i.e. food bowls, cat litter pans, utensils, carrying cages;
- Assist the public with adoptions and inquiries;
- Exterior maintenance if required i.e. cleaning of outside dog runs, snow removal;
- Other duties as required for day to day operations
Qualifications and Skills
- Animal care experience in a shelter, veterinary or kennel setting
- Knowledge of a variety of animals, animal behaviour and their care requirements
- Demonstrated ability and comfort levels handling animals with varying temperaments
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to work within a fast paced, at times a stressful environment
- Must be flexible to perform a variety of duties;
- Ability to remain professional under pressure;
- Able to multi-task, prioritize work load and flexible to adapt to change and shifting priorities;
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- A demonstrated compassion towards people as well as animals
- Must be able to perform manual labour and lift 50lbs
- A valid Ontario G driver’s license and good driving records preferred
- Strong command of the English language – verbal and written
- Ability to work morning, evening, weekend and holiday shifts as assigned
Working Conditions:
- Requires the ability to pick up all sizes and types of animals
- Exposure to distressed and/or aggressive animals
- Dealing with the public under a variety of circumstances
- Working in a noisy environment
- Handling various chemicals and medications
- May have to handle wildlife (potential for zoonotic diseases)
- Working in an emotionally charged environment

Job Hours: Average of 24-32 hrs per week. Shifts will vary between weekdays 12-8, Saturday and Sunday 8-4 and statutory holidays.
