Overview:
Marylen Reid Law is seeking an articulate and motivated Articling Student to join our team. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Child Protection law, working under the supervision of an experienced lawyer dedicated to serving the needs of vulnerable families. As an Articling Student, you will have the chance to contribute to meaningful legal work while developing your skills and knowledge in a supportive and dynamic environment. You will not work more than 40 hours a week. We are a paperless firm, and working closely together. You will attend many simple court appearances.
Responsibilities:
- Case Management: Assist in the management of a caseload of Child Protection matters, including conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and discussing with clients.
- Court Representation: Attend court proceedings, including hearings and trials, under the supervision of a senior lawyer. Prepare and present legal arguments on behalf of clients.
- Client Advocacy: Provide advocacy to clients involved in Child Protection proceedings, ensuring that their rights and interests are effectively represented at all stages of the legal process.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with one lawyer and another article student.
- Legal Research and Writing: Conduct legal research on relevant statutes, case law, and legal principles related to Child Protection law. Draft legal opinions, memoranda, and submissions to support the legal arguments of the team.
- Administrative task: scheduling, saving documents, opening and closing files.
Qualifications:
- Legal Education: Completion or enrollment in a recognized Canadian law school program leading to a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate legal concepts clearly and effectively to clients.
- Adaptability: Balancing the challenge of upholding high standards while being limited on billable hours. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively. Co-working space. Ability to think on your feet when the unexpected happens.

- Dependability: Working continuously and reporting on your limits.
- Travel: having a car and possibility of going across the province is essential, even if rare.
