Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Care
- Conducts patient assessments including history-taking, vital signs, medication reviews, and screening questionnaires.
- Supports physicians with clinical procedures such as wound care, immunizations, injections, ECGs, liquid nitrogen therapy, ear irrigation, and point-of-care testing.
- Assists with chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, COPD, hypertension) and preventive health initiatives (e.g., immunization schedules, cancer screening).
- Provides patient education and counselling on health promotion, self-management, and treatment plans.
- Coordinates referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up care as required.
Care Coordination & Communication
- Collaborates with physicians, clinic staff, and external healthcare providers to support continuity of care.
- Communicates clinical information to patients and families in a respectful and professional manner.
- Manages patient documentation, charting, and clinical data within the clinic’s EMR system in compliance with regulatory standards.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Practices in accordance with the Health Professions Act (HPA), applicable College standards, Health Information Act (HIA), and clinic policies.
- Adheres to infection prevention and control standards, including proper handling of biohazard materials and equipment sterilization.
- Supports quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management initiatives.
Operational Support
- Participates in recalls, screening programs, and panel management activities as appropriate.
- Assists in managing medical supplies, vaccines, diagnostic materials, and clinical equipment.
- Contributes to clinic workflow optimization to enhance patient access and service efficiency.
Qualifications
Required:
- Completion of an approved nursing program.
- Active registration and good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Experience
- Experience in primary care, community health, Family Medicine, acute care, or ambulatory settings preferred.
- Experience with chronic disease management, immunizations, and patient education considered an asset.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMRs) preferred (especially AVA EMR).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong clinical judgment and assessment skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Knowledge of Alberta primary care systems and referral processes considered an asset.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Commitment to patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with the Health Information Act (HIA).
