About the Role
Gitwangak First Nation is seeking a practical, organized, and trustworthy Finance Manager to lead the day to-day work of the Finance Department. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Finance Manager supports budgeting, financial reporting, audit readiness, internal controls, cash flow monitoring, funding accountability, and clear financial information for leadership and managers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the Senior Finance Clerk and Finance Clerk, including work planning, review, coaching, and support for cross-training and continuity.
- Oversee core finance operations including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, receipting, deposits, reconciliations, and organized financial records.
- Lead and coordinate the annual budget process and support practical forecasting, budget-to-actual reporting, and variance explanations.
- Coordinate audit preparation, year-end working papers, schedules, reconciliations, and follow-up items with auditors and management.
- Support implementation of Gitwangak’s Financial Administration Law, finance policies, internal controls, delegated authority requirements, and sound documentation practices.
- Support funder reporting, agreement tracking, reimbursement requests, and finance support to housing, public works, health, education, prevention, social development, administration, and capital projects.
- Monitor cash flow needs, short-term financial pressures, banking controls, and emerging financial risks, and bring forward practical options to management.
- Help build financial understanding across Gitwangak by providing clear information, practical tools, and support to managers and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A CPA designation, or active enrolment as a CPA candidate working toward designation, would be an asset.
- Progressive experience in finance, accounting, budgeting, audit preparation, financial reporting, or related work. Supervisory or team-lead experience is preferred.
- Experience in a First Nation, Indigenous organization, public sector, non-profit, or community service environment is a strong asset.
- Experience with accounting systems, spreadsheets, electronic filing, financial report preparation, year end working papers, audit support, funder reporting, and internal controls.
- Knowledge of payroll, source deductions, remittances, receivables, payables, reconciliations, and practical month-end and year-end processes.
- Knowledge of First Nation funding environments, ISC-related financial reporting, CMHC or housing related finance, and project accounting is an asset.
