Skid Steer / Machine Operator
The Skid Steer / Machine Operator is responsible for safe and efficient operation of equipment to support nursery operations, tree planting, and digging activities. This role also includes transporting machinery between sites and providing on-site leadership to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards.
Key Responsibilities Equipment Operation
- Operate skid steers, mini-excavators, and related machinery for:
- Tree planting and transplanting
- Digging, grading, and site preparation
- Loading and unloading trees, soil, and materials
- Use attachments such as augers, buckets, forks, and tree spades
- Perform precise work in nursery rows, tight access sites, and municipal areas
Transportation & Logistics
- Safely transport equipment and machinery using trucks and trailers
- Load and secure skid steers and attachments in compliance with transport regulations
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Ensure proper load securement and weight distribution
- Coordinate delivery of equipment to job sites on schedule
Nursery & Tree Operations
- Assist with:
- Tree digging (bareroot, container, and B&B)
- Field layout and row preparation
- Internal movement of plant material
- Support planting crews with correct placement, spacing, and backfilling
- Handle trees carefully to maintain root integrity and plant health
Site Preparation & Execution
- Prepare planting sites through grading, trenching, and soil conditioning
- Organize workflow on-site to support efficiency and sequencing of work
- Assist with staging materials and coordinating equipment usage
Leadership & Site Management
- Lead and support crew members on-site to ensure smooth operations
- Provide direction to labourers and planting crews
- Monitor productivity, quality, and safety on assigned sites
- Act as a point of contact between field crews and management
- Identify and resolve on-site issues proactively
- Ensure projects stay on schedule and meet company standards
Safety & Compliance (High Priority)
- Operate all equipment in accordance with company safety policies and industry standards
- Conduct daily equipment and trailer inspections
- Follow Ground Disturbance Level II requirements when applicable
- Maintain situational awareness around crews, utilities, and the public
- Enforce PPE compliance:
- CSA boots, high-visibility clothing, hard hat, gloves, eye protection
- Follow safe loading, lifting, and transport procedures
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs
Maintenance & Equipment Care
- Perform routine maintenance including greasing, cleaning, and fluid checks
- Identify and report mechanical issues immediately
- Maintain equipment logs and transport records
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proven experience operating skid steer and/or heavy equipment (asset0
- Experience hauling equipment with trailers (required)
- Valid driver’s license (Class 5 minimum; Class 3 or 1 preferred)
- Strong understanding of load securement and towing safety
- Experience in landscaping, construction, or nursery operations (preferred)
- Tree planting and handling experience (asset)
- Ground Disturbance Level II, First Aid, or safety certifications (asset)
