Position Overview: The Facilities Shift Leader serves the community by ensuring municipal facilities are safe, clean, and well maintained. This position provides hands-on leadership and operational support on a shift-by-shift basis, primarily to colleagues and facility users. The role is responsible for training colleagues, monitoring service quality, and ensuring established standards are consistently met.
Through strong operational awareness, the ability to anticipate needs, and effective collaboration, the Facilities Shift Leader helps ensure that routine maintenance, custodial services, programs, and special events are delivered to a high standard. This position plays a key role in creating safe, welcoming, and positive experiences for all facility users.
Core Accountabilities:
Operational Leadership & Shift Management
- Lead and supervise facility operations across assigned shifts, ensuring all areas meet established standards for cleanliness, safety, and functionality
- Train and mentor colleagues on custodial procedures, equipment operation, and facility protocols to maintain service consistency
- Monitor work quality and provide constructive feedback to support team performance and professional development
- Coordinate scheduling and task assignments to ensure efficient coverage of routine maintenance and special events
- Communicate operational information clearly to incoming and outgoing shifts to ensure continuity of service
- Works with the Recreation Centre Operations Supervisor to amend, develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) as required
- Identifies where improvements can be made and works to improve processes, services and is willing to implement alternative solutions
- Willingness to work a variety of shift times and hours including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays based on the departmental operations and unexpected issues
Facilities Maintenance & Equipment Management
- Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance using hand tools and custodial equipment to keep facilities in safe working condition
- Inspect facilities daily to identify maintenance needs, equipment issues, or safety hazards
- Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as lifts and arena-specific machinery according to manufacturer guidelines
- Stock, organize, and safely manage cleaning chemicals and custodial supplies in accordance with health and safety standards
- Document maintenance activities and equipment issues for supervisor review and tracking
- Able to maintain a level of fitness and endurance required to perform the physically demanding operational duties, which include but are not limited to; working in high locations, confined spaces, hot or cold environments, heavy lifting, pushing and pulling, and industrial and light duty cleaning
Arena Operations & Community Service
- Oversee arena operations to ensure ice quality, equipment functionality, and facility readiness for programming and events
- Prepare and maintain facilities before and after public programs, rentals, and special events
- Welcome and assist facility users, addressing concerns and ensuring positive experiences
- Coordinate with program leaders and event organizers to support seamless facility setup and breakdown
Health and Safety
- Fulfill the Supervisor responsibilities under the Town's Health & Safety Directive
- Ensure worker safety, training, and proper equipment use across all shift activities
- Promote compliance with WCB, OHS, and applicable legislation in all facility operations
- Identify and communicate hazards, investigate incidents and unsafe conditions, and implement corrective actions
- Lead regular team meetings on operations, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Prepare clear written reports and documentation of incidents, inspections, and operational matters

Education & Qualifications:
Required
- At least 1 year of experience in facilities maintenance, custodial operations, or related field work
- Demonstrated experience supervising or leading a small team, or mentoring colleagues in a hands-on environment
- Knowledgeable about all aspects of arena operations
- Working knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning protocols, and basic maintenance procedures
- Ability to safely operate hand tools and power equipment commonly used in facility maintenance, and to work at heights
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license
- Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, program leaders, and facility users across all shift times
- Understanding of workplace health and safety principles and commitment to compliance with WCB and OHS legislation in Alberta
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
- Intermediate computer skills working with Microsoft office programs (particularly Outlook and SharePoint) and building management software, with the ability to create and edit documents, utilize calendar functions, and send emails
- Availability to work shift work in a seven-day-a-week operation, including morning, evenings, weekends, and holidays
Preferred/Asset
- Experience working in municipal recreation facilities, arenas, or similar public-serving environments
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems or work order tracking software
- Formal supervisory training or leadership development
- Current Standard First Aid & AED

- Arena Levels 1 & 2
- Certification and/or experience with confined space entry, fall arrest, skid steer, scissor & boom lifts
Salary & Benefits:
- Pay Range- $35.85 to $38.81 per hour to start. Compensation will be calculated based on the successful candidate’s related work experience and education

Work Schedule: This position requires a 40 hour per week commitment on a compressed 10 hour/ 4-day schedule which includes evenings, weekends and holidays. Thursday to Sunday from 6 am or 7 am to 4 pm or 5 pm.
