Role Overview
The Carpenter is responsible for performing skilled finishing carpentry and flooring installation on residential and commercial construction projects. The position involves reading project drawings and specifications, measuring and installing finishing materials, operating a variety of carpentry tools and equipment, and ensuring all work meets quality standards and project timelines. Working closely with project managers, clients, and other trades, the Carpenter contributes to the successful completion of construction projects through high-quality workmanship, efficient coordination, and adherence to workplace safety requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine project requirements. Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and install wood and other construction materials using hand and power tools. Install flooring materials, including hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, vinyl plank, and other commercial and residential flooring products. Install finishing carpentry components, including doors, trim, baseboards, casings, mouldings, stair components, hardware, and other interior finishes. Prepare layouts and ensure installations comply with project specifications, building codes, and company quality standards. Inspect completed work to verify accuracy, workmanship, and overall quality before project completion. Coordinate daily work activities with project managers, subcontractors, and other trades to maintain project schedules and efficient workflow. Operate, maintain, and safely use carpentry tools, equipment, and machinery. Estimate material requirements and assist with material handling, storage, and inventory on job sites. Troubleshoot installation issues and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper fit and finish. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations. Communicate professionally with developers, homeowners, and commercial clients while representing the company on project sites.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Completion of secondary school (high school diploma) is required. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program, trade school, or post-secondary education in Carpentry or a closely related skilled trade is required. A Red Seal Carpenter certification or equivalent trade qualification is considered a strong asset. A minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience in residential and/or commercial carpentry is required, with experience in finishing carpentry and flooring installation preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in the installation of finishing materials, including trim, mouldings, doors, cabinetry, and a variety of flooring systems. Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and work orders. Experience operating and maintaining a wide range of carpentry hand tools, power tools, and woodworking equipment safely and effectively. Strong knowledge of construction methods, building materials, workplace safety practices, and quality workmanship standards. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a construction team while managing multiple tasks and meeting project deadlines. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to delivering high-quality craftsmanship. Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to interact professionally with supervisors, co-workers, subcontractors, and clients.
