Join the City of Medicine Hat as a Water Treatment Plant Operator and play a vital role in protecting public health and supporting essential municipal infrastructure. In this position, you will help ensure the safe, efficient operation of equipment used in the production and distribution of the community's water supply, while also supporting the treatment of process residuals before safe return to the river.
This is a great opportunity for a skilled, safety-focused operator who enjoys hands-on work, troubleshooting, and contributing to a critical 24/7 municipal service.
Your key responsibilities

Safely operate equipment associated with the Water Treatment Plant and perform daily and routine maintenance.
- Monitor and adjust treatment processes to ensure drinking water quality consistently exceeds regulatory requirements.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and take corrective action to prevent or minimize plant upsets.
- Continuously monitor and calibrate equipment to maintain optimal plant performance.
- Maintain accurate operational and maintenance records and support the training of new staff.
- Perform sampling and laboratory testing, and safely batch, mix, and handle chemicals.
- Respond to emergency after-hours call-outs as required.
What you bring

Sound knowledge of water treatment plant operations, including equipment, processes, and maintenance practices.
- Strong attention to detail with demonstrated ability to maintain accurate operational records and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Ability to communicate effectively with operations, maintenance, and administrative staff.
- Working knowledge of plant systems including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/control, and SCADA systems.
Experience with software such as Microsoft Office and Hach WIMS is an asset.

Qualifications

Possess Grade 12 with advanced Math 30 and Chemistry 30.

Level 3 Alberta Environment Water Treatment Certificate is preferred.

Must hold a valid Standard First Aid Certificate and WHMIS certification.

Candidates with relevant industrial or municipal plant operating experience, may be considered.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Equivalent combination of management approved education and experience may be considered.

This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen which includes testing for cannabis use.
