Summary
The Junior Welder/Fitter supports our team with fit-up and basic welding tasks while learning the fabrication processes, quality standards, and safe work practices of our organization. Working under the guidance of experienced Welders and/or Fitters and supervisors, this role includes interpreting drawings, preparing material, performing basic layout and fabrication, and assisting with shop labour work such as grinding, cleaning, moving material, and maintaining a safe and organized work area.

Job Duties
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, shop sketches, and work instructions with support from a Lead Hand/Supervisor.
- Assist with material preparation (measuring, marking, cutting, deburring, grinding, and cleaning) and maintain accurate part identification.
- Perform basic layout and fit-up using measuring tools (tape, square, levels) and fit-up tools (clamps, jigs/fixtures) to assemble components to print.
- Tack weld and weld components within demonstrated competency and as directed (e.g., FCAW/GMAW/SMAW), escalating any issues to a Journeyperson/Lead.
- Set up work areas and equipment for welding/fabrication tasks (including preheat when required) following procedures and safety requirements.
- Support quality checks by verifying dimensions and fit-up, completing basic documentation, and correcting deficiencies under supervision.
- Operate shop tools and equipment within training/authorization (e.g., grinders, cutting torches, brake press, shear, drill press, basic CNC support) and perform routine care/housekeeping.
Requirements
- Completion of (or currently enrolled in) a Welding, Metal Fabrication, or related trades program
- Foundational knowledge of welding/fabrication tools and safe work practices; willingness to learn company procedures and welding standards.
- Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity, with the ability to measure accurately and follow instructions.
- Ability to work in a team environment, take feedback/coaching, and demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Comfortable working in an industrial shop environment and able to perform physical tasks (e.g., standing for extended periods and lifting within safe limits).
- Assets: CWB tickets (or ability to test), forklift/overhead crane training, previous co-op/shop experience, and experience with FCAW/GMAW/SMAW.
Work Conditions
- Employee may be required to work in potentially hazardous environments requiring protective equipment.
- Employee may be exposed to dust, hazardous chemicals, high temperatures and high levels of noise.
- Employee may be exposed to uncomfortable work settings; may have long combinations of standing, crouching, or sitting.
- Repetitive tasks within a fast-paced environment.
- Overtime as required.
