Job Overview
We are seeking a detailoriented, strategic Senior Accountant to support our growing operations and help deliver highquality work and exceptional service. The ideal candidate will excel in managing complex project billing, jobcost analysis, vendor and subcontractor expenses, regulatory compliance, and consolidated financial reporting across our expanding list of subsidiaries. This role also offers the opportunity to work closely with a collaborative team and leverage modern accounting systems to ensure accurate, dependable financial data.
Duties:
- Oversee daily accounting operations and ensure accuracy of financial data across all business units (QuickBooks Online and Buildium).
- Supervise, mentor, and review the work of the Junior Accountant, delegating tasks and providing guidance as needed.
- Manage complex project accounting, including job‑cost tracking, progress billing, and subcontractor/vendor payment workflows.
- Review and approve journal entries, transaction postings, and reconciliations prepared by junior staff.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and subsidiary ledgers, resolving discrepancies promptly.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes to ensure timely payments, collections, and proper coding.
- Administer payroll and verify accuracy of employee compensation, deductions, and job‑cost allocations.
- Prepare internal management reports, budgets, and cash‑flow forecasts to support operational decision‑making.
- Ensure compliance with GST, PST, payroll remittances, and other regulatory filing requirements.
- Monitor and strengthen internal controls, recommending process improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce risk.
- Analyze financial data to identify variances, trends, and operational issues requiring action.
- Collaborate with construction, property management, and plumbing teams to support project performance and operational needs.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Skills:
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software, including QuickBooks; Buildium experience is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of AP, AR, payroll, and reconciliation processes, with the ability to review and approve junior staff work.
- Demonstrated experience in budgeting, cash‑flow forecasting, and account analysis to support operational decision‑making.
- Thorough understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, and auditing practices, including regulatory compliance.
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail in all bookkeeping and review functions.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with the capacity to interpret financial data and identify issues.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with management, project teams, and direct reports.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines.
The ideal candidate will hold a diploma or degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (a degree is an asset but not required). An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. The role requires three to five years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within construction, property management, plumbing, and/or a related industry.
