Interim Executive Director (Maternity Leave Coverage)

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Nova Scotia (CAFNS) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to step into the role of Interim Executive Director during a 16-month maternity leave. This is a unique opportunity to lead a respected provincial foundation that works alongside frontline partners to ensure vulnerable children and youth have access to the supports and opportunities they need to thrive.
About the Role
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Interim Executive Director will provide strategic and operational leadership across all areas of the organization. You will guide day-to-day operations, steward key relationships, and ensure strong financial management and governance - while continuing to advance CAFNS’ mission and impact.

What You’ll Do
Lead & Inspire
- Provide steady leadership aligned with CAFNS’ mission, strategy, and values
- Support and motivate a small, dedicated team and engaged board
- Identify opportunities to strengthen impact and reach
Drive Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency and accountability
- Maintain organizational systems, compliance, and best practices
- Support board and committee work, including planning and reporting
Steward Finances
- Manage the budget, cash flow, and financial reporting
- Oversee bookkeeping, audits, and CRA requirements
- Partner with the Finance Committee on financial oversight and investments
Advance Fundraising & Grants
- Lead fundraising efforts, donor engagement, and key events
- Write and manage grant applications and reporting
- Oversee the intake and adjudication of grant requests
Build Relationships
- Act as an ambassador for CAFNS with community partners, government, and funders
- Strengthen partnerships across the child- and youth-serving sector
- Support communications and public awareness efforts
Support Governance
- Coordinate board and committee meetings, materials, and follow-up
- Ensure bylaws, policies, and filings are current and adhered to
- Lead the Annual General Meeting and annual reporting process
Who You Are
- An experienced nonprofit leader with a track record in operations, finance, and fundraising
- A strong relationship builder who brings professionalism, tact, and sound judgment
- Highly organized and adaptable, able to manage competing priorities with ease
- An excellent communicator, comfortable representing an organization publicly
- Knowledgeable in governance and the charitable sector
Qualifications
- 5+ years of senior leadership experience (Executive Director or similar)
- Experience in nonprofit management, including financial oversight and board governance
- Proven success in fundraising and partnership development
- Post-secondary education in a relevant field or equivalent experience
Additional Details
- 4-day work week, 7 hour work day
- $60,000 annual salary
- 5% RRSP Matching
- Based in downtown Halifax, hybrid arrangement available.
- Some evening and occasional weekend commitments required
Pay: $60,000.00 per year
