Responsibilities
- Operate boom truck/crane to safely load, unload, transport, and position materials and equipment
- Perform controlled hoisting, swinging, and placement of loads in accordance with established procedures
- Operate additional heavy equipment, including rubber tire backhoes and tracked excavators, as required
- Haul and deliver equipment and materials to and from job sites, ensuring loads are properly secured and transported in full compliance with applicable regulations
- Perform crane setup, including outrigger deployment, ground condition assessment, and site evaluation
- Conduct pre-trip, pre-lift, and post-trip inspections of both truck and crane in accordance with regulatory and company requirements
- Ensure all rigging and load securement practices meet industry standards and safety regulations
- Maintain compliance with all applicable legislation, codes, and company safety policies
- Complete all required documentation, including inspection reports, logbooks, and operational records
- Perform routine maintenance checks and report mechanical deficiencies in a timely manner
- Provide support to field crews during non-operating periods, as required
- Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to apprentices, fostering the development of technical competencies, safe work practices, and adherence to industry standards
Certification and Licensing Requirements
- Valid Class 1 Driver’s License
- Valid Red Seal Journeyman Certificate (Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator – Boom Truck)
- Certification is required for operation of:
- Boom trucks (including telescoping and articulating booms with live lines) with lifting capacities greater than 5 tons (4.5 tonnes) and up to 65 tons (59 tonnes)
- Articulating booms without live lines with lifting capacities greater than 8 tons (7.3 tonnes) and up to 65 tons (59 tonnes)
Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrated experience operating truck-mounted hydraulic cranes in construction or utility environments
- Proficiency in operating various types of heavy equipment, including rubber tire backhoes and tracked excavators
- Comprehensive knowledge of rigging practices, load charts, and standard signaling procedures
- Strong understanding of applicable occupational health and safety legislation and safe work practices
- Ability to work effectively in outdoor environments and varying site conditions
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Physical capability to perform the duties associated with the position
