Location: Calgary, AB
Firm: S. Kritzer Professional Corporation
Work Arrangement: Hybrid (1-day remote/week)
Are you a CPA Manager in public practice who enjoys both technical tax work and client advisory?
Do you want a role where you are not just reviewing files in the background, but helping manage client relationships, support a growing team, and play a meaningful role in the day-to-day operations of a boutique CPA firm?
S. Kritzer Professional Corporation is a small, growing boutique CPA firm based in Calgary, Alberta. We specialize in Canadian personal tax, corporate tax, owner-managed businesses, compilation engagements, and U.S. cross-border personal tax matters.
We are looking for a client-facing CPA Tax Manager to become a key part of the firm’s next stage of growth. This is an excellent opportunity for a public practice manager who wants more autonomy, more client impact, and more involvement in the operations of a growing boutique tax firm.
About the Role
The successful candidate will take ownership of a meaningful portion of file review, client communication, workflow management, and day-to-day technical questions. A key goal of this role is to ensure clients receive timely, clear, and thoughtful support without every matter needing to flow directly through the firm owner. This is a highly client-facing manager role.
This role is ideal for someone who is technically strong, confident with clients, highly organized, and able to explain complex accounting and tax concepts in plain English.
What You Will Do
· Review Canadian personal tax returns, corporate tax returns, compilation engagements, and related working paper files prepared by the team.
· Act as a main point of contact for assigned clients, respond to client questions, draft professional client communications, explain tax concepts clearly, and help manage expectations throughout the year.
· Identify tax issues, review files for accuracy and completeness, provide practical recommendations, and determine when matters should be escalated to the firm owner.
· Assist with file progression, internal deadlines, client follow-ups, outstanding information requests, and overall workflow.
· Support and mentor the firm’s accounting technician and administrative assistant, answer internal questions, provide review notes, and help strengthen the team’s technical and client-service capabilities.
· Assist with improving internal processes, client communication templates, workflow systems, quality control procedures, and technology adoption.
· Over time, receive direct mentorship in U.S. personal tax and Canada–U.S. cross-border tax concepts, allowing you to develop expertise in a specialized and valuable advisory niche.
What Success Looks Like
Over time, the successful candidate will be able to:
· Independently review a meaningful portion of Canadian personal tax, corporate tax, and compilation files
· Handle routine and moderately complex client questions directly and confidently
· Draft clear, polished, client-ready emails with minimal revision
· Reduce the number of routine technical and workflow matters requiring the firm owner’s direct involvement
· Support the team with questions, review notes, deadlines, and client follow-up
· Build strong client relationships and become a trusted point of contact
· Exercise strong professional judgment and know when to escalate complex matters
Who You Are
The ideal candidate will have:
· Canadian CPA designation
· Current or recent experience in a Manager role within public practice
· Strong technical background in Canadian personal tax, corporate tax, and compilation engagements (experience in US personal tax is a bonus).
· Experience working with owner-managed businesses and private company clients
· Strong file review skills and attention to detail
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to draft clear, professional, client-ready emails
· Confidence communicating directly with clients and explaining tax concepts in plain English
· Strong judgment, professionalism, and emotional intelligence
· Ability to manage deadlines, priorities, workflow, and competing client needs
· Proficiency with common public practice software such as TaxCycle, QuickBooks, CaseWare, ShareFile, or similar platforms
· A proactive, solutions-focused mindset
This role is best suited to someone who enjoys being client-facing and wants to be involved in the practical day-to-day leadership of a growing firm. It is not intended to be a purely back-office review role.
Compensation, Benefits & Perks
This role offers:
- Competitive Salary: $95,000 to $115,000 CAD, based on experience
- Performance Bonus: Annual bonus opportunity based on individual performance, leadership contribution, client service, and firm results
- Paid Summer Flex Fridays: During July and August, enjoy every second Friday off with no reduction in salary.
- Hybrid Flexibility: One remote workday per week, year-round
- Paid Vacation: Three weeks of paid vacation
- Health & Wellness Support: Health spending account
- Professional Development: CPA Alberta dues and approved professional development courses covered
- Specialized Tax Training: Direct mentorship in Canada–U.S. cross-border personal tax
- Tax-Focused Work: Canadian tax, compilations, owner-managed businesses, and cross-border personal tax, with no audit/assurance engagements at all
- Sustainable Workload Philosophy: While tax season is naturally busy, we are committed to managing workloads and client expectations in a sustainable way
- Meaningful Leadership Role: Opportunity to help improve workflow, client service standards, technology adoption, and internal processes
Why This Role Is Different
This is not a standard manager role at a large public accounting firm.
You will work closely with the firm owner, have direct client involvement, influence day-to-day operations, and help shape internal systems and client service processes as the firm continues to grow.
We also recognize that public practice can be demanding, particularly during tax season, and we are intentional about creating flexibility during slower periods, including a number of paid summer flex Fridays in July and August.
For someone who wants more autonomy, more variety, and more direct impact than a traditional public practice manager role, this position offers a meaningful leadership seat within a specialized boutique firm.

If you are a CPA Manager who is ready for a more client-facing, autonomous, and impactful role, we would love to hear from you.
