Course Information

Building an understanding and application of instructional theories, teaching strategies, classroom management and assessment techniques for secondary school physical and health education. Approaches to curriculum and lesson development, and the evaluation of resource materials will be explored. Motivation and wellness, student diversity, creating a positive school culture, and a safe environment in the Physical and Health Education classroom will be the focus. (1.0 credit)

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Curriculum and Pedagogy in Intermediate/Senior Health & Physical Education. The instructor will guide teacher candidates in developing the content knowledge and pedagogical skills required to design and implement effective, inclusive H&PE programs in secondary schools. Candidates will engage with the Ontario H&PE curriculum, explore Ministry policies such as Growing Success, and consider how to support diverse learners in both physical activity spaces and classroom-based health education.

Design and deliver a course that examines the nature, purposes, and social contexts of schooling, informed by educational theory, policy, and personal reflection.
Introduce students to key questions such as: What is the purpose of school? What roles do teachers play? How do schools reinforce or disrupt social norms?
Facilitate critical discussion on topics such as: the structure and culture of schools, teacher identity and professionalism, schooling and social reproduction, access, equity, and the hidden curriculum, and the historical development of public schooling in Canada.
Create assessments that allow students to reflect on their own educational experiences, analyze policy and social issues, and apply foundational concepts in education.
Maintain regular communication with students and provide constructive, timely feedback.
Collaborate with the Teacher Education office in the Faculty of Education as needed.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education, Kinesiology, Education, or a related field.
OCT teaching qualifications in Intermediate/Senior Health and Physical Education.
Demonstrated experience teaching secondary school H&PE, with a focus on inclusive practices.
Record of effective teaching in post-secondary or teacher education settings is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or held within the last five years.
Familiarity with trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning (SEL), and mental health education in the H&PE context.
Experience mentoring teacher candidates or supervising practicum placements.
Knowledge of safe schools policies, inclusion of students with disabilities, and school wellness frameworks.
Commitment to anti-oppressive education, diverse body inclusion, and culturally responsive pedagogy in physical and health education.
Graduate degree in Health and Physical Education, Kinesiology, Education, or a related field.
