Job Overview
The Medical Office Nurse provides professional nursing care and clinical support to physicians and other healthcare providers in a busy medical practice. The nurse is responsible for assessing patients, assisting with examinations and procedures, administering treatments and medications, educating patients, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring the efficient operation of the clinic while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
Responsibilities
- Welcome and prepare patients for examinations and medical appointments.
- Obtain and document patient histories, vital signs, medications, and allergies.
- Perform nursing assessments and communicate findings to the physician.
- Assist physicians with examinations, minor procedures, and treatments.
- Administer medications, injections, immunizations, and other treatments as prescribed.
- Perform specimen collection, wound care, ECGs, and other clinical procedures within scope of practice.
- Provide patient education regarding medications, treatments, chronic disease management, and preventative health.
- Respond to patient questions and telephone inquiries, providing appropriate nursing advice or triaging concerns.
- Coordinate referrals, diagnostic testing, follow-up appointments, and continuity of care.
- Maintain accurate and confidential electronic medical records (EMR).
- Monitor and stock medical supplies and ensure examination rooms are clean, organized, and properly equipped.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards and maintain a safe clinical environment.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support clinic policies and procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurse practitioners, administrative staff, and external healthcare providers.
Qualifications
- Current registration in good standing with the applicable nursing regulatory body (RN or RPN/LPN).
- Current CPR certification.
- Previous experience in a physician's office, primary care clinic, or outpatient setting is considered an asset.
- Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
- Strong clinical assessment and patient education skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative healthcare team.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and providing compassionate, respectful care.Valid registration as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with current licensure
- Prior experience in nursing homes, hospitals, or home care environments preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, medication administration, and laboratory procedures
- Experience working with diverse patient populations including seniors, children, or those requiring hospice or dementia care
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems such as Epic and Cerner is highly desirable
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team setting
- Ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail
- Compassionate approach to patient care with a focus on safety and comfort
