Job Overview
The Kamsack Times is hiring a Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) Reporter to strengthen civic journalism in a rural region in eastern Saskatchewan covering Kamsack, Cote First Nation, Keeseekoose First Nation, The Key First Nation and four other smaller communities.
This position is supported through the Local Journalism Initiative, a national program that funds original, civic-focused journalism in underserved communities.
With 37 per cent of the population in our coverage area having Indigenous ancestry, we'd like to place a particular focus on improving our coverage of Indigenous issues, especially as it relates to the three nearby First Nations communities.
This is a term position that will last until March 31, 2027, with the potential for renewal.
Responsibilities
- Report, write, and file original local stories each week
- Attend meetings and events (some evening coverage required)
- Conduct interviews, research, and fact-checking
- Work collaboratively with the publisher/editor for planning and edits
- Maintain strong journalistic standards (accuracy, fairness, verification)
- Build trust and sources across multiple rural and Indigenous communities
What You’ll Produce
You’ll contribute consistent, professional local journalism with expectations of approximately:
- 8–10 stories per week for our newspapers depending on the news cycle.
- At least one story per weekday published online.
- At least one large feature per month.
Experience
- A journalism degree, diploma or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Excellent writing and interviewing skills.
- Knowledge of Canadian Press style
- Ability to work independently at home in Kamsack while collaborating with a team based in our office in Canora, a half-hour to the west.
- A driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
- Willing to work evenings and weekends when needed.
- An understanding of Indigenous issues and cultures is an asset.
