The Addiction Counsellor III with Young Adult Services works in partnership with designated Post Secondary Institutions (PSI’s) to provide care for post-secondary students. The PSI’s included are: University of Alberta, MacEwan University, NAIT, NorQuest, Concordia University, Yellowhead Tribal College, Makami, and The Kings University. This role supports students and their families that require more intensive, specialized, or sustained intervention, ensuring smooth transitions to appropriate AMH services within the broader system of care. Post-secondary students fall within the peak age for first onset of mental illness, with many experiencing the emergence of mood, anxiety, or psychotic disorders during this life stage. Advances in psychotherapeutic medications and early intervention have enabled more individuals living with mental illness to pursue post-secondary education. As a result, campuses are increasingly home to students navigating both academic demands and complex mental health needs. In addition to the clinical landscape, students face a unique transitional life stressors: balancing full-time studies with part-time work, living independently for the first time, adapting to new roles and expectations, and forming peer relationships in unfamiliar environments. This stage also often includes increased exposure to both social and recreational alcohol or substance use, which may further exacerbate existing mental health concerns. Working from a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and developmentally attuned framework, the Addiction Counsellor III delivers comprehensive assessment, intervention, and system navigation tailored to each student’s needs. The role emphasizes collaborative care planning, risk management, and strong communication with PSI clinicians to promote continuity, accessibility, and timely care.
As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor's degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act (Alberta) must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Current CPR (BLS Level C – Health Care Provider) and NVCI is required. 3-5 years’ experience in a community mental health and addictions care setting providing case management and psychosocial interventions for mental health and addiction related disorders. Experience providing crisis/urgent supports in a community setting as well as working alongside community partners. Access to a reliable motor vehicle for work-related travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous populations and applying trauma-informed, culturally safe practices. Strong understanding of the impacts of intergenerational trauma and colonization, with the ability to build respectful partnerships and deliver services using anti-oppressive and culturally responsive approaches. Experience with providing therapeutic interventions within scope of practice.
