Camp Caravan Counsellors are the heart of Camp Caravan. They work directly with children, guiding age-based groups through daily programming while fostering joy, safety, belonging, and meaningful connection.
Counsellors lead activities, facilitate games, support spiritual exploration, and build relationships with campers throughout the week. Working as part of a collaborative travelling team, Counsellors partner closely with the Team Lead, Program Lead, YouthCrew, Site Hosts, and volunteers to ensure a positive and well-run camp experience at each location.
This role is ideal for individuals who love working with children, value inclusive community, and are eager to contribute to a dynamic, faith-rooted summer ministry.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Camper Care & Program Leadership
- Lead and support a consistent age-based group of campers throughout the week
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment where every child feels safe and valued
- Facilitate Camp Caravan programming including games, outdoor play, art, storytelling, music, and group activities
- Encourage participation through enthusiasm, creativity, and positive role modelling
- Adapt activities to meet the diverse abilities, learning styles, and needs
2. Faith, Reflection & Wonder
- Support age-appropriate spiritual exploration through stories, questions, reflection, prayer, and create expression
- Participate in large-group gatherings, music, and community moments
- Counsellors with gifts in music, drama, or storytelling may be invited to take on additional leadership in these areas
3. Safety, Supervision & Wellbeing
- Ensure the physical, emotional, and spiritual safety of all campers at all times
- Follow all Camp Caravan safety protocols, child protection policies, and emergency procedures
- Be familiar with site-specific emergency and safety plans each week
- Respond appropriately to incidents and concerns, reporting to the Team Lead or Program Lead as required
- Foster a culture of care, respect, and accountability
4. Teamwork & YouthCrew Mentorship
- Work collaboratively with the Camp Caravan staff team to support daily programming and logistics
- Support and mentor YouthCrew members, during daily activities, offering guidance, encouragement, and clear direction during activities
- Participate in daily staff check-ins, reflections, and end-of-week debriefs
5. Community & Hospitality
- Welcome campers and families during daily arrival and dismissal times
- Represent Camp Caravan’s values of care, inclusion, and community in all interactions
- Partner respectfully with Site Hosts, volunteers, and community members
- Contribute to a positive, hospitable presence within each host community
6. Camp Logistics & Daily Operations
- Assist in setup, takedown, and care of program spaces and materials
- Support attendance tracking and basic administrative tasks as required
- Help transport and organize supplies between camp locations when needed
QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training & Experience
- Experience working with children in camps, schools, or recreational, or community programs (asset)
- Previous leadership experience in a camp or faith-based setting (asset)
- Experience working collaboratively as part of a team
Certifications (Required or Willing to Obtain Prior to Employment)
- Standard First Aid & CPR Level C
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Prevent It! (or equivalent)
- Alberta Government Food Safety Certificate (asset)
- Mental Health First Aid - for People Working with Youth (asset)
EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
- Term: June 27, 2025 – August 28, 2026 (9 weeks total)
- Training: Mandatory Camp Caravan Full Team in-person overnight training will take place at Camp Pringle (Vancouver Island) Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 7:00 PM until Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 3:00pm
- Counsellors will be paid for 9 weeks, which includes
- Camp Weeks
- In-person overnight training
- Required online training modules
- Between 1/2 day and 2 days of in-person training in May and/or early June
- Summer employment is 40 hours per week and includes some evening and weekend travel (Days in lieu will be planned accordingly)
- The closing week of camp may finish 2-3days early to allow time in lieu for travel days and overtime worked
- Travel, accommodations, and logistical supports related to training and camp weeks outside the City of Calgary are coordinated by Camp Caravan
- Other Requirements: Must have reliable transportation to and from camp locations (personal vehicle, transit, carpool, etc)
Compensation
- This is a salaried position
- Compensation is based on experience and will range from Minimum wage to $19-$21 per hour
