About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a woman in the early stages of suspected dementia who lives with her two adult sons in Oakville. She's a widow experiencing slight cognitive decline, decreased motivation, and some depression. While she can navigate basic tasks like microwaving prepared meals and making coffee, she requires supervision for safety—particularly around cooking due to forgetfulness and burn risk. She prefers female companionship, is hard of hearing, and has a friendly but vocal dog in the home. She's currently enrolled in a bridging program but needs additional support to fill gaps when family members are working.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and engage her in conversation and activities to combat isolation
- Prepare meals during visits (she can handle reheating but shouldn't cook independently)
- Light tidying and household maintenance
- Supervision for safety, especially regarding cooking and daily activities
- Encourage participation in activities and help maintain motivation
- Provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Occasional transportation for errands or appointments
- Communicate regularly with family about her well-being and any changes
What We're Looking For:
- Experience supporting individuals with dementia or memory loss
- Strong English communication skills (she is hard of hearing, so clear speech is essential)
- Cantonese language skills are a significant asset
- Female caregiver preferred
- Calm, patient demeanor with ability to bring positive energy
- Reliable and consistent—she thrives on routine and familiarity
- Comfortable with dogs
- Ability to engage someone who may be reluctant to participate in activities
- Takes initiative while respecting independence
- Strong communication skills with family members
Schedule:
Tuesdays from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM (4 hours per week). Start date flexible, ideally beginning in early August to allow for proper introductions and transition. This is a three-month commitment with potential to extend based on her needs and day program enrollment.
The family values building a consistent relationship—you'll be their caregiver, not rotating through multiple clients. This consistency is especially important given her cognitive challenges and need for routine.
