New Afton
Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 105,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. Position Reports To: Industrial Hygienist
Position Overview
The industrial hygiene technician will play a key role in the industrial hygiene program across all departments.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Preparing and calibrating sampling equipment for field use;
- Industrial hygiene sample collection for industrial dusts and vapours;
- Conducting noise assessments;
- Cataloguing hazardous materials on site;
- Data interpretation in relation to legislative requirements;
- Performing respirator fit testing;
- Data entry and records administration;
Develop and implement IH/OH programs and initiatives to identify, assess, and control workplace health hazards;
Ensure IH/OH efforts reduce risk to people, the environment, and the organization in alignment with global Occupational Health & Safety strategies;
- Assisting and providing coverage for the Industrial Hygienist, when needed;
- The successful candidate will be expected to work afternoon shifts, split shifts, and weekends on some occasions.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in science or engineering or a two-year diploma in occupational health and safety with air sampling experience;
- Knowledge of occupational health and hygiene;
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to adapt and manage a busy workload;
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
- A commitment to technical excellence;
- Completion of, or enrollment in a post graduate occupational health and safety program is considered desirable.
Preference would be given to candidates with:
- Mining Experience
- 2-3 years experience in a safety oriented role
Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
- Completion of pre-placement functional screen
- Provide proof of a valid driver’s license
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $68,000 to $80,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
