Duties & Responsibilities:
- Counselling individuals, couples, families or groups within a framework that is culture-based
- Determining an appropriate healing path in collaboration with the client and when necessary, with other health care providers through consultation, chart reviews and case conferencing
- Developing, coordinating, and implementing program responses to assist the healing process
- Working with other team members to develop mental health strategies specific to Aboriginal people
- Provide counselling services to individuals, families or groups within a framework that is culture-based utilizing traditional teachings and traditional healing ways
- Assist clients to identify their issues, determine their healing path and establish their goals. Determine appropriate healing path in conjunction and collaboration with the client and when necessary, with other health care providers through consultation, chart reviews and case conferencing
- Participate in case reviews, case conferences and ethical reviews as required or requested
- Provide counselling services in a safe, warm and caring manner
- Provide counselling services ensuring that confidentiality is strictly maintained.
- Provide care that reflects an understanding and competent knowledge of health and other issues facing the Aboriginal community such as the effects of the post-colonial and residential-school-syndromes
- Responsible for ensuring client information is properly and appropriately collected through charting methods / AHT data base
- Pro-actively identify and address community health issues through individual client information and needs assessment tools
- Maintain a client caseload according to the standards set by the organization and report to the Babishkhan Manager and Mental Health Coordinator on a regular basis Re: case load levels
Qualifications & Experience
- A minimum of Master of Social Work degree; Registration with the OCSWSSW.
- Minimum requirement of 2 years’ experience working in the mental health field with 2 years’ experience in counselling children ages 4 to 14 years old.
- Experience and knowledge of issues affecting Aboriginal people in an urban setting.
- Must have a well-developed understanding of the thought processes, problems and symptoms children experience.
- Must have comprehensive knowledge and experience with theoretical models and evidence-based, client centered mental health therapeutic interventions for the treatment of children and families with mental health needs and knowledge of all relevant legislation and standards.
- Experience and skills with program development and implementation.
- Possess professional skills and have access to community resources/networks.
- Must possess strong interpersonal, advocacy, collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
- Must possess a high degree of initiative, self-motivation, reliability and thoroughness.
- Must have strong clinical skills in assessment, formulation and treatment.
- Must have well-developed research skills including the ability to analyze, conceptualize and organize.
- An understanding and working knowledge of health and other issues facing the Aboriginal community such as the effects of the post-colonial and residential school syndromes.
- Preference for working in a multi-disciplinary setting.
