Purpose:
The Ophthalmic Assistant plays an integral role in supporting the daily operations of the ophthalmology clinic by providing both clinical and administrative assistance. This position is responsible for assisting physicians with patient care, performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing, coordinating patient appointments, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring an efficient and positive patient experience.

Job Responsibilities:
- Schedule consultations, follow-up appointments, diagnostic testing, procedures, and injection clinics.
- Answer telephone calls and respond to patient inquiries professionally.
- Coordinate referrals from physicians, optometrists, and other healthcare providers.
- Maintain accurate electronic medical records (EMR).
- Scan, upload, and organize patient documentation.
- Process prescription refill requests and physician correspondence.
- Prepare charts and clinic schedules.
- Order medications
- Communicate with pharmacies, insurance providers, and patient support programs regarding medication access and reimbursement.
· Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with PHIPA and organizational policies.·
- Welcome patients and escort them to examination rooms.
- Obtain and document patient medical and ocular history.
- Measure and record visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil reactions, and other preliminary clinical assessments.
- Perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing including:
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
- Fundus photography
- Administer ophthalmic drops under physician direction and according to clinic protocols.
- Prepare patients for physician examination and treatment.
- Assist ophthalmologists during examinations, laser procedures, and intravitreal injection clinics.
- Prepare procedure rooms and maintain sterile supplies.
- Clean and disinfect ophthalmic equipment in accordance with infection prevention and control standards.
- Monitor inventory of clinical supplies and notify management when replenishment is required.
- Provide patient education regarding examinations, treatments, medications, and follow-up care.
Qualifications:
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) designation or willingness to obtain certification.
- Experience working in retina, glaucoma, cataract, or comprehensive ophthalmology clinics.
- Experience supporting intravitreal injection clinics.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and testing procedures.
- Familiarity with specialty pharmacy services and patient reimbursement programs.
Working Conditions
- Fast-paced outpatient ophthalmology clinic.
- Frequent standing, walking, and movement between examination rooms.
- Occasional lifting of supplies and equipment up to 25 lbs.
- Travel between sites required.
- Flexibility to support clinic schedules
