About Us
DJN Services Ltd. is a locally owned / established site development contractor specializing in excavation, grading, leveling, and demolition. We take on residential / commercial / industrial / municipal projects and pride ourselves on accurate bids, tight cost control, and delivering jobs on budget. We're looking for a sharp, detail-driven Estimator to help us win the right work and keep our projects profitable.
The Role
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates for excavation, earthwork, site grading, and demolition projects from bid stage through award. You'll perform quantity takeoffs, build detailed cost models, solicit subcontractor and supplier pricing, and work closely with project managers to track costs against budget once the job is running. This role is a blend of desk work and site knowledge — the best candidate understands both the numbers and what it takes to move dirt.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed, accurate cost estimates and bid proposals for excavation, grading/leveling, and demolition scopes of work.
- Read and interpret blueprints, site plans, grading and drainage plans, cross-sections, and project specifications.
- Perform quantity takeoffs including cut/fill and earthwork volume calculations, haul-off/import, disposal, and demolition quantities.
- Develop and maintain estimating spreadsheets and cost models in Excel.
- Calculate equipment production rates, labor hours, material, trucking, and disposal costs to build up unit and total pricing.
- Solicit, review, and level subcontractor and supplier quotes; incorporate the best pricing into bids.
- Conduct site visits and pre-bid walk-downs to assess site conditions, access, soil conditions, and potential risks.
- Perform job costing — set up budgets, track actual costs against estimates, and identify variances and their causes.
- Prepare progress reports and support progress billing throughout the life of a project.
- Manage bid documents, deadlines, addenda, RFIs, and bid submissions.
- Analyze completed jobs to refine future estimates and improve accuracy.
- Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and field crews to align estimates with actual execution.
- Stay current on material and fuel pricing, local labor rates, and market conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience estimating excavation, earthwork/grading, and demolition projects.
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, site plans, and specifications.
- Demonstrated experience with job costing — building budgets and tracking actual vs. estimated costs.
- Experience preparing progress reports and supporting progress billing.
- Excel skills as asset (formulas, lookups, structured estimating workbooks).
- Solid understanding of earthwork quantity takeoffs, including cut/fill and volume calculations.
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment, production rates, and site logistics.
- Strong math, analytical, and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines at once.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred / Nice to Have
- [2]+ years of estimating experience in site work or civil construction.
- Familiarity with construction management / job costing software (e.g., JobTread, QuickBooks, or similar).
- Knowledge of local permitting, utility, and environmental/disposal regulations.
- Understanding of jobsite safety standards and requirements.
- Diploma or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites.
