Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager is a key member of the finance leadership team responsible for the organization's day-to-day financial management, reporting, and internal controls. Supporting multiple entities, this role ensures the integrity of financial information, compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and provides meaningful financial insights that support strategic decision-making. The Controller also plays an important leadership role in developing the finance team, enhancing financial processes, and partnering with department leaders to drive operational and financial excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Oversee the organization's accounting operations, ensuring compliance with Canadian accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.
- Manage the general ledger, month-end and year-end close processes, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, and financial analyses for senior leadership.
- Maintain accurate accounting for deferred revenue, restricted donations, investments, and other specialized fund accounting activities.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliations, oversee cash management, and execute electronic funds transfers and wire payments.
- Prepare and file CRA charitable returns, HST filings, and other statutory reporting requirements.
- Coordinate the annual external audit and act as the primary liaison with auditors.
- Participate in special projects and initiatives that support organizational priorities.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Prepare monthly departmental financial reports and analyze budget-to-actual variances.
- Partner with department leaders to review financial performance, investigate variances, and provide recommendations.
- Support the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting.
- Monitor cash flow and investment performance, providing recommendations to the CFO to optimize financial resources.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Regularly review and enhance financial policies, procedures, and accounting practices to improve efficiency and support organizational growth.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve reporting, and strengthen financial governance.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide day-to-day leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the finance team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance development of accounting staff.
- Promote strong communication and productive working relationships across departments while providing financial expertise to leaders throughout the organization.
- Keep current with changes in accounting standards and industry best practices, making recommendations that strengthen the organization's financial operations.
The ideal candidate is an experienced CPA who combines strong technical accounting expertise with a collaborative and service-oriented approach. Comfortable working in a dynamic, mission-driven organization, you enjoy balancing hands-on accounting responsibilities with leadership and strategic financial support. You have a proven ability to manage multiple priorities, deliver accurate financial reporting, and communicate complex financial information in a clear and meaningful way to both financial and non-financial stakeholders. You are naturally organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, continuously looking for ways to improve processes, strengthen internal controls, and support sound financial decision-making. Advanced Excel skills are essential, while experience with QuickBooks and the not-for-profit or charitable sector would be valuable assets.
