The Opportunity. FIFO Innovations is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join the R&D team. This role reports to the Director of Product Development and supports the design of new products and processes, improvement and maintenance of existing products, and design analysis of components and assemblies.
Responsibilities:
- Lead or assist in concept development, prototyping, product design, testing, and design iteration.
- Participate in new product development projects through design and documentation reviews.
- Design and create mechanical and electrical assembly jigs and fixtures.
- Create and modify 3D CAD and detailed 2D part and assembly drawings of products in Onshape, and review engineering drawings prepared from peers.
- Participate in or lead customer driven custom projects.
- Prepare manuals and required documents.
- Participate in product testing, performance evaluation and certification activities, and write test reports.
- Coordinate QC inspections, initiate root cause analysis and corrective and preventative action plans for non-conformances, and communicate with vendors when required.
- Be able to justify designs based on engineering principles, calculations, empirical testing, and other relevant information.
- Work with CNC equipment, 3D printers, and the R&D lab to build and iterate designs.
Education and Experience
- B.A.Sc. in Quality Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in BC, eligibility for registration, or Engineer in Training (EIT) registration is preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience, including experience within product development, change management processes, and vendor management.
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of quality tools such as SPC, Process Control, FMEA, Problem Solving, Root Cause Analysis, Poka Yoke, and other Six Sigma tools.
- Knowledge of design rules, plastic material types, plastic and silicone molding, mill and lathe processes, rapid prototyping, and DFMA.
- Ability to design, develop, and prototype creative mechanical solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to create CAD models, detailed drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and tolerance analysis using Onshape.
Other Requirements
- Skilled in managing multiple tasks, organizing priorities, and adjusting goals when project priorities change.
- Strong communication, teamwork, interpersonal, and technical documentation skills.
- Willingness to travel to local and international facilities, vendor locations, and tradeshows when required.
Work Schedule
- Full time, 40 hours per week

- Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
Salary Range
- CAD $72,000–$88,000 annually. FIFO Innovations determines compensation based on education, experience, skills, and qualifications related to the role.
