McFarlane Family dental is a growing, busy, progressive and patient centered dental office in search of a dental hygienist to join our team. This practice is committed to growth, educating patients and maximizing our patient's experience.
The RDH is in a special position to provide our patients the most important health service possible. The hygienist assists the dentist in providing oral health to patients by cleaning, scaling and polishing teeth. Takes and processes X-rays. Records evaluation of mouth conditions and extent of prophylaxis on dental chart to provide dentist with information for more complete diagnoses and subsequent treatment if needed. Provides the patient with ongoing preventive oral care through patient education, treatment and reinforcement of the doctor's treatment plan.
Responsibilities:
- Support with patient flow and keep the schedule on track.
- Review the patient’s Medical History at each visit and recognize the contraindications to dental treatment in general and/or to specific procedures planned for that appointment.
- Thoroughly examine the oral tissues and accurately record the findings on the patient’s chart.
- The hygienist must record, on the patient’s chart any teeth and/or existing restorations that the Dentist has diagnosed as showing visible decay, faulty margins, etc., or that the patient indicates are causing them discomfort.
- The hygienist accurately measures and records pocket depths at least once every year, or more frequently as per patient’s clinical individual needs. Periodontal charting frequency to follow RCDSO & CDHO guidelines and recommendations.
- Relates well to patients and demonstrates a high degree of sensitivity to all patient concerns in order to ensure patient comfort and confidence.
- Provides each patient with a thorough and clear explanation of all dental hygiene procedures necessary for the patient’s individual treatment including subsequent periodontal checks and future recall appointments.
- Detection and removal of calculus. The hygienist locates and completely removes all calculus to provide a smooth surface and an environment in which the gingival tissues can heal and inflammation can be resolved.
- Plaque and stain removal – The hygienist removes all remaining plaque and stain, by polishing and creates a smooth surface, which will better resist colonization of microorganisms.
- Fluoride application – The hygienist correctly applies Fluoride on appropriate patients following the completion of scaling and polishing procedures.
- Patient education – The hygienist provides a complete and clear explanation of oral hygiene techniques needed in home care to support dental hygiene treatment received in the clinic.
- OHI are discussed and demonstrated effectively for thorough patient understanding and reviewed at each appointment.
- Patient motivation – the hygienist conveys information concerning treatment and oral hygiene in a positive manner, resulting in patients being enlightened and motivated toward oral health.
- The hygienist performs scaling, root planning and gingival curettage in a non-traumatic manner, thereby keeping the patient’s discomfort to a minimum throughout all dental hygiene procedures.
- The hygienist thoroughly documents intended hygiene procedures to be performed including the type of treatment.
- The hygienist accurately and completely records treatment at each visit in the patient’s chart, followed by his/her initials and Abel Dent designation (the last is automatic).
- The hygienist maintains a safe, pleasant and comfortable environment for the patient.
- The hygienist properly maintains equipment, instruments and supplies to ensure safety and asepsis; follows infection control guidelines, and performs daily, weekly and monthly operatory maintenance.
- Staff interpersonal skills – The hygienist communicates with the rest of the staff and dentists in a cooperative, tactful and productive manner using common courtesy, active listening skills, respect, non-judgmental attitude and office guidelines for problem solving and conflict resolution.
- Educates team members: - The hygienist patiently and effectively provides information to other staff members to increase the entire team’s awareness of optimal hygiene treatment. The hygienist provides information to the Dental Centre regarding updates regarding the best standards of practice as per CDHO.
- Follows dentist’s order regarding the type and number of X-rays that need to be taken. Proper radiographs taken. Does not retake any X-rays without a dentist’s permission.
Follows infection control protocol as outlined by the RCDSO, CDHO and the government of Ontario.

Pay: Up to $90,000.00 per year
