ABOUT THE BUSY SCHOOL
The BUSY School Calgary is a newly approved Charter School opening in August 2026, created to re-engage young people in Grades 10 to 12 who have stepped away from traditional education. We combine a high school diploma pathway with real-world vocational training, giving students the skills, confidence, and connections they need to launch into meaningful careers. We are mission-driven, relationship-first, and genuinely different.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The School Counsellor (Wellbeing) is a cornerstone of our student support model. You will provide therapeutic and wellbeing support, case manage students facing barriers to attendance and engagement, and coordinate services with families, teachers, and external providers. Your work will be grounded in trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches, with a focus on removing the obstacles that keep young people from reaching their potential.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Provide individual wellbeing and therapeutic support to students
- Case manage at-risk and disengaged youth, including assessment, planning, monitoring, and review
- Coordinate with teachers, families, welfare staff, mentors, and external service providers
- Support the development and review of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), safety plans, and attendance strategies
- Respond to critical incidents and conduct crisis interventions, including risk assessments, as appropriate
- Monitor attendance data and implement targeted intervention strategies
- Maintain accurate, confidential records and produce progress reports
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- A bachelor's degree in social work, counselling, or psychology (diplomas in relevant fields may be considered with experience)
- Demonstrated experience working with disengaged, at-risk, or vulnerable young people
- Strong knowledge of youth services in the Calgary area, or the ability to quickly build those connections
- Training or experience in trauma-informed and restorative practice (preferred)
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, schools, and government departments
- Excellent problem-solving, self-management, and record-keeping skills
