Progressive Fabrication Inc. is growing and actively recruiting an Industrial Sandblaster to join our team. Reporting to the Branch Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing steel and fabricated metal components for protective coatings through abrasive blasting, surface preparation, and equipment maintenance. This position requires the ability to work safely in a physically demanding industrial environment while maintaining high quality standards and productivity. This is a night shift position working a 4 12-hour shifts rotation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform abrasive blasting of structural steel and fabricated metal components to achieve specified surface preparation standards prior to painting or coating application.
- Remove rust, mill scale, weld spatter, oxidation, old coatings, and other contaminants using abrasive blasting and mechanical surface preparation methods.
- Operate and maintain abrasive blasting equipment, including blast pots, compressed air systems, hoses, nozzles, and associated equipment.
- Prepare workpieces by masking, plugging, or protecting surfaces that are not to be blasted.
- Inspect blasted surfaces to ensure compliance with quality specifications and coating requirements.
- Perform grinding, chipping, and other surface preparation activities using hand and power tools.
- Assist with loading, unloading, moving, and organizing steel components using forklifts and other material handling equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs of blasting equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Collaborate with welders, painters, and fabrication personnel to maintain production schedules and quality standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by performing routine housekeeping in the shop, blast bay, and yard.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable occupational health and safety regulations, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Complete other duties as assigned to support shop operations.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in industrial abrasive blasting, surface preparation, or a related industrial manufacturing environment is considered an asset.
- Ability to safely perform physically demanding work in an industrial setting.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety practices and proper use of PPE.
- High attention to detail with a commitment to producing quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
- Experience operating forklifts or other material handling equipment is an asset.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CSA-approved steel-toe safety boots required.
Working Conditions
- Comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in physically demanding conditions.
- Exposure to dust, noise, compressed air systems, and varying indoor and outdoor temperatures.
- Required use of respiratory protection and other PPE while performing abrasive blasting operations.
- Overtime and weekends may be required.
