Title: Senior Application Developer
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
Place of work: 7171 107 Ave SE, Calgary, AB – Hybrid
Reporting relationships: IT & Enterprise Systems Manager
Role Summary:
The Senior Application Developer at the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) plays a central role in maintaining and evolving a suite of mission-critical applications that underpin Canada's national livestock identification and traceability program. This role spans the full application lifecycle from Java/Spring Boot backend services and REST API development to mobile applications (Ionic/Angular), e-commerce integrations, and cloud-hosted infrastructure on Microsoft Azure.
The successful candidate will be a technically strong, self-directed developer who thrives in a small, collaborative team environment, takes ownership of complex problems, and contributes meaningfully to architecture and modernization decisions. CCIA is actively investing in API-first design, cloud migration, and DevSecOps practices - this role is central to that journey.
Responsibilities:
· Design, develop, and maintain enterprise Java/Spring Boot applications, RESTful APIs, and supporting backend services aligned with business and regulatory requirements.
· Contribute to CCIA's application modernization initiatives, including cloud migration to Microsoft Azure and API-first architecture adoption.
· Build and enhance features in CCIA's Ionic/Angular mobile application, ensuring quality across iOS and Android platforms.
· Integrate applications with enterprise systems including SAP ERP, e-commerce platforms, and third-party APIs.
· Participate in DevSecOps practices: CI/CD pipeline maintenance (GitHub Actions), code reviews, static analysis (CodeQL/SAST), and adherence to security standards.
· Analyze user and stakeholder requirements and translate them into well-designed, scalable software solutions.
· Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues across the application stack — backend, mobile, and integrations.
· Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code and uphold engineering standards across the team.
· Provide technical guidance and mentorship to intermediate developers.
· Stay current with emerging technologies relevant to CCIA's stack and proactively recommend improvements.
Education & Experience
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
· 5+ years of professional experience in Java development, with demonstrated expertise in enterprise-grade applications.
· Strong proficiency in the Spring Framework (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security).
· Solid experience with RESTful API design and development.
· Proficiency in SQL (SQL Server preferred), including query optimization and schema design.
· Experience with Ionic/Angular or similar mobile/hybrid frameworks is a strong asset.
· Exposure to React and TypeScript is an asset, particularly for candidates interested in contributing to frontend modernization work.
· Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure services (App Services, Azure SQL, Key Vault, API Management, or similar) is preferred.
· Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or equivalent) and DevSecOps practices.
· Experience integrating with ERP systems (SAP) and/or e-commerce platforms is a plus.
· Proficient with Git and collaborative development workflows (pull requests, branching strategies, code review).
· Strong debugging, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills.
· Comfortable working in a regulated, compliance-driven environment with external stakeholders (government agencies, industry partners).
What Sets You Apart
· You take ownership - you don't wait to be told what to do when you see a problem.
· You communicate clearly with both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders.
· You're comfortable with ambiguity and can deliver in a lean team without heavy process overhead.
· You have a genuine interest in the agriculture, or regulatory technology space.
