Key Duties:
The Research Assistant will assist Drs. Harms and Petrella in transcribing handwritten records contained in microfilm files from the Hudson Bay Company Archive. The project provides support to the Anisininew Okimawan Tribal Council, of the Island Lake Region of Norther Manitiba, who have tasked Drs. Harms and Petrella to aid them in the recovery of their histories, be delving into the records taken by Hudson Bay Company’s Trade Post Managers, 1700s to present.
Qualifications/Experience:
– A third-fourth year undergraduate student
– Familiar with Microsoft Suite, Teams and Zoom
– Able to read cursive writing for transcription purposes and available for training in cursive decoding and transcription of microfilms of handwritten accounts of trading posts, including account books, as well as other handwritten documents, from the HBC archive
– Able to work independently and report regularly (every two weeks) to a supervisor, on completed work and up to date accounting of worked hours, as well as entering hours in the BU Workforce time and attendance system
– Demonstrate patience as the position entails deep dives into archival records
– Work meticulously in keeping accurate and clear files that contain the transcription of historical files, in both word and excel file formats
– Available to work flexible hours, up to but not more than 10hrs per week
