About the Client:
We are seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 83-year-old woman recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease living in Burlington. She resides in a two-story home with her husband on one accessible floor with grab bars installed. While she remains cognitively sharp with good long-term memory, she experiences some short-term memory challenges typical for her age. She can complete crosswords, manages her blister-packed medications independently, and remembers safety tasks like locking doors and turning off the stove. However, Parkinson's is affecting her mobility and balance, requiring walker assistance for longer distances and support during elevation changes, transfers, and getting in and out of vehicles. She uses a rocking motion to stand from seated positions and may feel briefly unsteady upon rising. Her mood fluctuates between withdrawal and engagement, and she benefits greatly from caregivers who bring positive energy and encouragement to keep her active and socially connected.
Responsibilities:
- Transport to and from physiotherapy appointments (15 minutes away, 3-4 times weekly) and future Parkinson's exercise classes
- Provide mobility assistance including transfers, walking support, and steadying during elevation changes
- Accompany on daily neighborhood walks with walker for exercise and fall prevention
- Assist with standing from chairs and provide stability support
- Light housekeeping and laundry
- Meal preparation assistance and reheating
- Medication reminders as needed
- Provide companionship and encouragement to maintain engagement and quality of life
- Run occasional errands
What We're Looking For:
- Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle
- Experience with Parkinson's disease or similar progressive conditions
- Patient, calm demeanor with ability to let frustration roll off
- Strong communication skills with family
- Ability to encourage movement and social engagement
- English-speaking
- Understanding that the client's husband may be present and occasionally impatient due to caregiver stress
- Reliable and consistent with positive, uplifting energy
Schedule:
Starting with 2 days per week, building toward 4-5 days per week. Each shift is 4 hours during weekday mornings to accommodate recurring physiotherapy appointments at consistent times. Flexibility with specific days is possible to match caregiver availability. Weekend coverage is not needed as family is present.
